It's a minor entry but fun to watch Sterling Hayden as a flustered man handcuffed to the lovely Ruth Roman on the run in the desert in Cold War noir 5 STEPS TO DANGER.

Do you have a favorite Sterling Hayden film? I asked this question when we watched THE KILLING, so maybe it's changed. My favorite now is

THE ASPHALT JUNGLE (1950)

Agreed. In many ways she is the film's innocent and the relationship (and motives) between her and Dix are at the emotional heart of the film. Despite being "criminals" their hearts are pure - or more so than those around them.

Jean Hagen is so good as the mousy girlfriend. You really feel for her frail vulnerability.

I used a couple of memorable quotes from THE ASPHALT JUNGLE for the introduction to my first film noir art book.

Sterling Hayden was like the “most interesting man in the world” and nobody really knew it.

This. You can work non-stop and have all the talent and still not see a dime from that effort. It's not a complaint - just a feature of what it means to create art. For most people art is the journey not the eyes that experience it afterwards. This is ok but should also set your expectations.
Some close friends to be get a little frustrated in my tendency to priortise luck in my own career, as they know how I work. I try to explain that work just is buying a lottery ticket. It's necessary, but certainly not sufficient. I know many folks who've worked as hard but the dice have been cruel.

This, a million times over. Please tell people when you like their work. Creatives can go a very long time without any outside input at all, positive or otherwise, so a gesture of appreciation often makes all the difference in the world.
Remember your favorite creator possibly might be struggling with imposter syndrome and doubt and this timeline sucks.. so if you find yourself thinking “wow I really relate to this persons work” or that persons work gives you joy, you should probably tell them. It’s a hard time to be a creative.

Unpopular Trek opinion but imho STIV has aged into meh status for me. Great soundtrack & some fun bits but it suffers from that mid-80s film stock look (flat colors, actors look haggard) & the 1986 setting makes it less timeless (sorry for the pun) than the other TOS movies. STV looks better.
Hello, computer.

Leonard Nimoy's Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (aka The One With the Whales!) was released 39 years ago today.

One of the most popular Trek films, the Whale Movie is indeed one of my fav. Fresh, funny, with a fine environmental message, it completes an overall successful trilogy.
