If you're one of the thousands of federal employees who Russ Vought/the Trump admin just RIF'd, I'm very interested in hearing from you about the work you've been doing and what services will now be hurt/gutted with you gone.

Anonymity granted.

So today was not a great day.

So lost in this paradise.

I’ll just say it. The military pay bill was a dumb idea anyway.

Troops aren’t more deserving of being saved from the massive wage theft happening from federal workers right now than anyone else is.

This happened a LOT after 9/11. It made me uncomfortable then and it makes me squirm now.

Wow, wow, wow. This has always been legally possible but the law has virtually never been enforced — and now this is the SECOND case I've heard of in the last month (first involving a person with a green card) of a noncitizen being charged for failure to carry their papers.

NEWS: ICE gave a Rogers Park man a $130 ticket for not having his papers on him. They rounded him up last week and eventually let him go, but not without a fine that some critics say is un-American. Trump admin enforcing little-used law

I don’t like Columbus but I do love a public holiday.

We need more of them. People need more rest, God damn it

Polly Pocket was where my perfect life lived. In it were two happy blonde women, who I felt looked a little like me. I could escape into it anytime. I could carry it anywhere.

Kids don’t always break rules to test boundaries.

Sometimes they do it because not to is unbearable.

“She’s not hurt. She fine,” he would snap at my mother that night, when she reacted.

My mother was too consumed with outrage to tend to me.

I curled in a ball on the couch I could not unwind, that night. Polly came, too. She was in my hand the whole time.

What she didn’t know and could not have known was how brutal my home life was. I was very good at hiding it. I still am.

That was the year my father picked up my absurdly small human body and threw it across the room, into the couch.

For those unfamiliar, Polly Pocket was an absurdly small toy, effectively a shell, in which perfectly-crafted, tiny people lived in an adorable house.

I was not supposed to have toys at school and my teacher, rightly or wrongly, confiscated my contraband.

When I was about 10, I took my Polly Pocket to school.

My parents were having a particularly bad round of fighting, and while they wouldn’t separate for another 6 years, this is about the time the wheels started to come off, as they say.

The last two years, the thing that really gets the kiddos grinning is bags of microwave popcorn.

Go figure.

I just had a thought: what if there is some heretofore unknown law of conservation of wonder, such that every time you take a picture of a breathtaking splash of sunlight on leaves, some other stupid-looking photo has to be created to balance it out. And that’s why Kash Patel exists.
Green leaves in a bright splash of sunlight, fading into deep shadow in the background

One universal truth is that a toddler can be seconds from passing out in a car but the moment you get home they’re as awake as they were when they woke up this morning.

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

I remain hopeful that one day I’ll accidentally be in the same bar as Mike Black and I will have too much whiskey and will insist on a fun debate on FP with him.

I am…
really glad you never apologized.

It would have been enough.

That trade is multilateral would be an astonishing thing for this admin to learn.
protip.altgov.info
China is finding other markets for the goods they would have shipped to us.

The tariffs aren’t crushing them bc trade is multilateral, not bilateral, so they’re not about trade, they’re a sales tax on Americans so the richest can pay less income tax.

New Chinese Sept trade data out this morning - here's the picture for the EU

- China's exports to EU up 14.2%
- China's imports from EU up 9.4%
- Despite rebound in import number, trade surplus up 20% because of China's surging exports, to $22.85bn in Sept

All USD, year on year

Special place in the afterlife for those trying to look like a father without being one in the ways that actually matter — by protecting their child’s wellbeing, not their own ego or assets.

You think it’s wrong to pay the rest of the feds who are working?

Trump is arguing to pay only the troops as if they’re the only ones working.

RFK fired the CDC official (w/decades of experience) leading the measles outbreak response. It's been decades since we've had such a large outbreak. And just to ensure they they can spread the measles outbreak even farther, they also fired the leadership for the center focused on immunization.
Figure showing the largest measles outbreak in the US in decades. There are over 1500 cases as of October 7 2025
