Ex-typhoon Halong is going to produce extreme winds and coastal flooding this weekend in western Alaska. Norton Sound and the YK delta coast especially high threat. #akwx #ExtremeWeather #AlaskaSky @markspringer.bsky.social @climatologist49.bsky.social @hanners64n.bsky.social

In Lower 48, "climate change" conjures images of hot summers, fires, storms, & flooding

In interior & northern AK, another effect is clear: permafrost melt. It destroys roads & structures, releases CO2 & methane, & awakens 40,000 year old microbes.

What could go wrong?

Ancient Alaska microbes' thaw helps understanding of climate change feedback loop
Using samples gathered from a permafrost tunnel north of Fairbanks, researchers have awakened microbes that were last active as far back as 40,000 years ago.

Another "storm of the century" is hitting Kotzebue, for the second year in a row. Last year's storm almost took out my dad's house. Woke up to videos of the flooding and it's already bad. They are expected to get another storm after this one passes.

As a primatologist, Jane Goodall was a huge inspiration to me. I admired the way she describes chimpanzee behavior with such detail and empathy, and she’s inspired so many people and advocated for chimpanzee conservation and welfare.

However, I'm dismayed at what her narrative leaves out (1/10)

Can confirm. He's not. He's also probably quoting Star Teck II: The Wrath of Khan, which uses the same line. Not that that makes it make sense...

As this administration guts climate science & mitigation efforts in the midst of a climate emergency & opens #Alaska to more extraction - we are all left to suffer the consequences. @rick any data on amount of rainfall lately & potential impacts?

When I was on the ice w Nat Geo, we visited the emperor penguins at Atka Bay which is a colony that hops up onto the ice shelf rather than staying only on sea ice. This means that when chicks fledge they have a high-dive of a jump to reach the water. Which they do. With spectacular inelegance. 🧪🌍🦑🦉

Upon her return home, Kenojuak continued to make art and founded the West Baffin Co-operative.
In 1958, she published her 1st print, Rabbit Eating Seaweed. In 1960, she painted her iconic work The Enchanted Owl, which became a stamp in 1970.

The photo showcases an artwork titled "The Enchanted Owl." It features a stylized owl depicted in a vibrant and dynamic manner. The owl's body is colored in shades of green and yellow, with intricate dot patterns giving it texture. Its eyes are large and expressive, outlined in black. Radiating from behind the owl are long, bold feathers or rays, alternating in black and yellow, creating a striking contrast and a sense of movement or energy. These rays curve and flow around the owl, adding to the dynamic feel of the piece. The background is a simple, light beige, which helps to highlight the vivid colors and bold lines of the owl.
