Geology & Botany are sorely overlooked in the paleo community, its really sad, because the botany of an area and its geology are both necessary for understanding the context in which animals would have lived. Having a bunch of isolated individuals means nothing without knowledge of where they lived.

First #FossilFriday of 2026!

To celebrate, check out this beauty on my desk today: a neural arch from a juvenile Apatosaurus cervical vertebra.

This lovely specimen was collected by Museum crews from the Mygatt-Moore Quarry in 2025.

I always think environmental and botanical backgrounds are mostly overlooked in internet paleoart communities.

I remember a person who asked "Isn't a geological background in academic paper just talks about where the fossil is from?" several years ago.

No.

I visited the Korean paleoart exhibition titled <The Lost Things> yesterday, where I provided some artwork, and they will be on display until this March. The exhibition is not held in a gallery, but in a cafe that invites scientists to hold various events every week.

"Reply with a piece of palaeoart that deeply influenced you as a child."

It is always hard to choose which was the best. But Ikkyu Murakawa's artworks were really breathtaking, especially Apatosaurus and Allosaurus. This was featured in a book that wasn't published outside of Japan and Korea.

Some new #paleoart to see out 2025: a Hybodus shark attacks a squadron of belemnites (Passaloteuthis), which respond by deploying ink decoys of themselves and jetting to safety. Cephalopod ink use is amazingly sophisticated; it's not just a smokescreen! #HappyNewYear, everybody! #sciart #fossil
