Whenever I spent time on normie platforms (your threads, your Facebook), I become more and more convinced that a large part of our problem as a nation is the literacy crisis. People have trouble with basic reasoning. They can't follow very simple logic or compound sentences. It's disturbing.

I don’t think we need to be told that leaders lie and heroes fail. I think that’s obvious. I need some stories where there are honest people doing good things again. They don’t have to be edgy. They can just be good.

I'm watching The Big Lebowski on U-Next and it's like they're using an old 35mm copy for the stream. It has film judder and flecks and faded colors. On the one hand, it's shocking quality in the age of streaming. On the other, it feels like watching at a backstreet second-run cinema in 1999.

I don't use LLMs. They're just stochastic parrots that deliver a string of text that looks like the most likely response to a question that a consensus-human would emit. It's not an answer, it's an answer-shaped object that's wrong 25-75% of the time. Utterly useless to me.

The problem with Poker Face is it misses something that made Columbo really special. The Columbo criminals were all rich assholes who wouldn't normally see the inside of a jail cell.

The thing that depresses me in the whole AI revolution in my industry (I’m a literary translator and publisher) is that the question is not whether machines can replace human translators, but how will we deal with the fallout after machines are forcibly introduced regardless.

Just so you know, there is no happy end to this post. Near the end of September 2015, my two-almost-three-year-old son and his neighbor friend tracked down a kitten in an empty lot across the street. We'd heard him crying for a while, but hoped his mother would come get him. There were a lot of strays around, and we were used to hearing cats cry.

Like, yes, all those reasons are part of the circumstances. That's what the word means.
