If you're in the U.S., put what you can into an IRA*. Find some good index funds to invest in. Make small weekly investments, rather than all at once. Don't panic when the market drops; it'll recover.
*open a Roth IRA if you don't need the tax deduction now. You won't pay taxes on the gains later!

so many of the small indignities of daily life come from us being denied the ability to tell a rich man in a tech company to fuck off. minesweeper has microtransactions. paid services have ads. the opt out says maybe later. the drive thru is a broken chatbot. your car is an ipad. fuck off! fuck off!

Android:

Don't give apps your
tracking ID!

One big way your Android phone tracks you is by making up an ID for itself and giving that to advertising companies, which eventually winds up in the hands of investigators. It calls this ID its "advertising ID." In the latest Android versions, you turn off delivery of this by going into the Settings app and navigate to Security & Privacy > Privacy > Ads. Tap "Delete advertising ID."

In older Android versions where that option isn't there you reset it instead, which protects you better if you do it often.

iPhone: Don't give apps your
tracking ID!

One big way your iPhone tracks you is by making up an ID for itself and giving that to advertising companies, which eventually winds up in the hands of investigators. It calls this ID its IDFA, or "ID for advertisers."

Whenever an app asks for this, you can click "Ask App Not to Track" and that app (and the creeps which sweep up information from it) won't be able to follow you! Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking to turn this off for apps you might have already allowed.

You can turn off another tracker by going to Settings > Privacy > Apple Advertising and set the "Personalized Ads" switch to "off"

Dave's specials felt like he was giving TED talks, and looked like they were recorded back to back in a single day.

Other comedians I'd seen on Netflix, ranged from just not funny to either sad or bitter.

Seeing a bunch of them dance for the Saudis isn't very surprising, at this point.

...but if Netflix offers you more than you'd make in a year for just two shows, why would you continue the usual grind? Plus if the contract says the material is exclusive to their service, you CAN'T perform it on the road.
So you crap out a special, cash the check, and wait for them to call back.

Seeing Dave's first couple of Netflix specials (among others) convinced me that Netflix had destroyed comedy. None of it felt workshopped or audience-tested.

Normally comedians go on tour with their latest set, but test out new material along the way, until they have a whole new show...

for me it's the combination of fearing getting burned out on art again, and worrying that the number of commissions I'm certain I can safely do may not be enough to meet my financial goals. They definitely wouldn't be enough to match my industry salary, but that may be the price of reduced stress...

Finding the middle ground of what's fair to me and to the customer is something I've struggled with before.
Now the bigger question is whether I want to do art as a job any longer.
The game industry has been taxing, in the past few years. Or maybe it always was.
