"There's a Vancouver in Canada?"

That's how you mock Vancouver, you shitty, soulless hack.

But its hype was incredible
I think sometimes when we think nostalgia is for a thing that really wasn't that good, quite often what we were really nostalgic for was the publicity around it that originally made us want to see it, which was often much better

(also the soundtrack that had a lot of dialogue) The thing is, it's a film about deceit, belief and exploitation, particularly of kids, so the "reality" stabbing one gets the proper feeling across, I think.
But then at the end we step back a level EVEN FROM THAT, though the effect is lost at home

...obviously I hadn't gotten to see it when it was new. I think it was 1997 when I got the tape. Before that I contented myself with reading the published script

I think yeah, PILLOW BOOK was 1996. I saw the premiere in SF a night early (there was a festival of his stuff at the Castro) because the print of BABY...melted.
The exact same thing happened in Berkeley a week later. I didn't get to see BABY till a kind soul on the internet sent me a tape.
