DOJ told a federal judge that it contained and investigated the scene of Pretti's murder. But from this report, it looks like all federal agents left the scene completely unattended within a few hours—a major breach of protocol that contaminated potential evidence. slate.com/news-and-pol...
Outside, Minneapolitans were cleaning up the gas canisters ICE had left behind and hugging each other. A man was trying to put up some trash bins that had been knocked over and restring police tape to form a perimeter. I started to help him, only then realizing that we were blocking off the site of Pretti’s shooting. He told me ICE had knocked over the police tape during one of their advances and no police or first responders remained. I wasn’t sure if it was a crime scene. We did our best to cordon off the area so no one would walk through.

I have a paper coming out next week on how much the fiscal outlook has deteriorated under Trump

I wanted to share one of the graphs early. We spent 14 years w/ very low borrowing rates. That is no longer the case

That part isn't Trump's fault (higher deficits are), but it's something to reckon w/
A picture is worth 1000 words, but this is a graph showing the interest rate the federal government pays on its borrowing. Rates hovered around 5% from 1793-1875, and from there declined to 2% before world war i. They spiked up to 4% and from there declined again until the end of world war ii, again back down to 2%. From there they climbed and climbed and climbed, hitting 10% in the early 1980s. From there they fell and fell and fell and fell. They were a bit under 5% before the Great Recession. And then they plummeted to 2%. They stayed there until 2023, and now they're at around 3.5%.

MY STATEMENT ON THE HORRIBLE SCENES PLAYING OUT IN MINNEAPOLIS AND ACROSS AMERICA JANUARY 25, 2026 In recent weeks, we've watched horrible scenes play out in Minneapolis and other communities that I never thought would take place in America. People, including children, have been seized from their homes, workplaces, and the street by masked federal agents. Peaceful protesters and citizens exercising their constitutional right to observe and document law enforcement have been arrested, beaten, teargassed, and most searingly, in the cases of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, shot and killed. All of this is unacceptable and should have been avoided. To make matters even worse, at every turn, the people in charge have lied to us, told us not to believe what we've seen with our own eyes, and pushed increasingly aggressive and antagonistic tactics, including impeding investigations by local authorities. Over the course of a lifetime, we face only a few moments where the decisions we make and the actions we take will shape our history for years to come. This is one of them. When did it become foolish to come to the aid of another? If anything it is a human instinct, especially for those in the nursing profession.

A witness claimed the defendant used a laptop to research homemade silencers. Her testimony tied the defendant to a homemade silencer used in a crime. Prosecutors concealed a forensic report showing no searches about silencers on that laptop. So lower court orders new trial.

Today SCOTUS reverses.

I’m back from Davos, Switzerland, just in time for a storm that has blanketed much of the East Coast, and as the latest shooting by federal agents in Minneapolis raises serious concerns throughout the country. Occasionally in this space, I have raised questions about how the business community uses its voice. In recent years, that group has gone largely silent on issues deemed “too political.” But at some point, business leaders — not just those in Minneapolis — need to raise their hands. They don’t have to do it individually; they can do it collectively, as the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce has done. (More on that below.) Whatever your politics, we can all agree that federal agents shouldn’t be killing U.S. citizens except in the most dangerous circumstances. Even if you believe an officer acted in good faith or out of fear for his or her life, the frequency of these episodes suggests a systemic training failure.
