Every once in a while a group of 10-15 tourists vanish without a trace in the Paris Catacombs and then afterward the Eiffel Tower is a few feet taller

I needed to get a key cut but it couldn’t be done because what the locksmith was working on was a copy (probably of a copy) and none of the three attempts he made would open the lock. The only solution was to throw away the lock and start again. Just a thought

Y'all. I just got ChatGPT to do everything in R for this manuscript. I mean EVERYTHING. And it's all legit and reproducible. I'm shook.

How are we mentoring our trainees in statistics now? Who needs to learn coding in R line by line, and who doesn't?

The "cognitive decline and brain damage from repeat COVID infections" and "easy to use robot that makes slop and melts your critical thinking skills" is a hell of a combo in a post-fact media ecosystem

We wuz robbed. Last goal was a foul on the keeper and shouldn’t have been allowed. Oh well.

2-3, last minute goal. Dammit.

The ball came to me at the sidelines, tapped it up with one foot to the other then back and passed it back perfectly. Some dads nodded.

1-2 second half. I will be disappointed if we lose this.
johngirvin.bsky.social
First half. We had a few on target TBF but their keeper did “saves”, which is unusual at this level.

0-1. Against the run of play, I have to say. Bah.

Kick off time and no sign of today’s opponents. They haven’t won a game all season and frankly if this is their attitude I can understand why.

U13 football returns after the storms last week. We’re on the pitches near where my old school used to be. It was demolished and rebuilt a bit to the side about 15 years ago, but it’s still the old stomping grounds.

Cognition is like strength. Use is required to not just gain, but maintain. The more thinking and cognitive work we offload, the duller we become as a result.

It's like deciding you'll use a mobility scooter without need and then figuring out a year later that you can no longer walk.

"The best way to read him would be with all your devices on the other side of a locked door."

Me on Nobel literature laureate László Krasznahorkai, a writer who "fits into the Nobel mould so fully that if he didn’t exist, the committee would have had to make him up."
Who is Laszlo Krasznahorkai, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature?
