The sheer size of the child penalty in labor markets (worldwide) makes it so important. Here's a new study digging deeper.

@jonasjessen.bsky.social @kinnelavinia.bsky.social
Why the motherhood penalty persists: Our analysis shows that declines in general competencies like numeracy account for at most 10% of the long-term child penalty in earnings, suggesting that gender norms, not skill depreciation, remain the primary driver of inequality.

But we hear all the time that GDP is growing 2% or 3%, so how is that possible?

That’s because the US population is growing (especially the adult population, age 20+)

GDP has grown 2.3% a year since 2010

But GDP per adult only 1.3%

It has become received wisdom in Brussels and Washington that there is a new “euro-sclerosis”: that the EU economy is lagging the US

This view is wrong

🚨 New paper alert: Exclusionary political rhetoric alone can drive people to leave their hometowns

In Poland, anti-LGBTQ resolutions by 100 local governments caused a rise in migration intentions, reflected in job search

Excellent thread 👏

German Reunification Day invites both gratitude and reflection.
Gratitude, because the peaceful revolution of 1989 was nothing short of a miracle — a bloodless dismantling of a repressive regime.
Reflection, because the wounds of the transition still mark the country —and because

The lack of spines among tech CEOs is pathetic... 🤮

Of course, the European leaders did the same to some degree, but at least this was to save Ukraine 💙💛
Incredible clip of tech CEOs fawning over Donald Trump. Someone store this clip in the underground archive vault

Yet, I am still extremely sad about IZA's main assets - the institute itself, its postdoc program, it's Berlin and Bonn campus, the guest program and the workshop series - being cancelled. It remains a big loss.

It's fantastic that the network is saved.

But IZA as an institute closing down is still a tremendous loss
Unfortunately, the "institute" itself has not found a new home. only its most tangible assets, the network and the discussion paper series, remain. Its postdoc program, the international campus in Bonn with its vibrant guest program, the workshop series, and the summer school, remain lost.

Incredible feeling to finally see it published 🤩

What are the macro effects of making UI more generous?

In this paper we seek to answer this contentious question 📝

We find increases in aggregate unemployment, driven by both longer UI durations & increased inflows 💡
"What is the effect of extending unemployment benefits on unemployment? How relevant are different channels for the total effect: search effort, separations and spill-over?"

A lot of attention is rightfully on gender inequalities in the labour market and, to a lesser degree, on inequalities in unpaid work ⚖️

But men falling behind in education and the lack of debate around this is also a big societal problem. Great paper 👇
