I was just denied entry to the Dilley detention facility while my constituent, seven-year-old Diana, remains inside.

What kind of sick, horrific conditions are children being forced to endure in there?

I will be back tomorrow. Accountability can’t wait.

Judge Talwani says that DHS' view that noncitizens lack 4th amendment rights — combined with ICE use of administrative warrants — is a recipe for abuse.

Cops were frequently getting caught planting drugs in 2017 because body cameras were new and many of them didn't understand how the technology worked.

When cops hit "record" it saved the 30 seconds from *before* they hit the button. Eventually, they figured it out.

Camp East Montana, the tent camp in El Paso, is reportedly a terrible place. And I struck by news that the admin wants to build warehouse detention facilities that are nearly 200% larger — holding up to 8,500 people in a single location.
Camp East Montana remains the largest facility in the US.
ICE detains over 3,100 people there on a typical day. From the reporting I have read, the conditions at Camp East Montana are extremely bad. detentionreports.com/facility/ERO...

there's certainly plenty to criticize in the Dems' asks but this is why splitting off the DHS funding from everything else was such a big win - there's going to be far less pressure on Dems to end a DHS-only shutdown than there was when "food stamps run out" was on the table
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Thursday that demands made by Democrats for new restrictions on federal immigration officers are “unrealistic” and warned that the Department of Homeland Security will shut down next week if they do not work with Republicans and the White House.

This is an important point.

Empathy—in and of itself—is anti-fascist.

The arts—and the project of higher education as a whole—teach empathy, enabling you to put yourself in other people’s shoes.

So to a fascist, they must be destroyed.
The war on empathy and the war on the arts are part of the same project.

Yes. The best you can hope for at the moment is to strengthen the ability of states to fight deployment; to give them power to stop new detention facilities; to slow hiring, and shrink the recruiting pool. The Democrat demands accomplish that. You are not going to get abolition now.
Nothing in this list stops what's happening or even meaningfully slows it down, and that's before the part where they're already signaling the masks, for example, could be conditionally ok. I've also yet to see an evidence-based argument for how body cams will help.

For those looking at Tom Homan's offer to MN sheriffs -- it's called a Basic Ordering Agreement. In essence, to skirt state law, DHS pays $50 in exchange for sheriffs to hold people 48 hours past their release date. It's not really a contract; it's like a warehousing agreement for bodies.
