But somehow, in some of these, somebody dropped a drop of poison: "the schools are making kids gay" or "you know, The Blacks ..." The worldview dominating the US right now spread through churches and church groups like these. I heard a woman who knit hats for the homeless call Mexicans insects.

This is the new rhetoric: take some value that resonnates with most (empathize with others' humanity, don't discriminate, strive for truth, protect the vulnerable) and misapply it to something whack. It has a 2fold impact: some might buy it outright or it may weaken commitment to the original value.
