I’m very sad to hear about Diane Keaton’s passing. She was such an inspiration to me, especially during my 20s. When I was writing my first book, Men and Music, I was living alone and single, really struggling with what I was supposed to do with my life.

My friends are like "I can't connect with/find time for my faith right now, do you have any advice?" and I'm like "make a space for prayer/meditation in your home. Don't care if it's a room or a corner or just part of a shelf. Put physical space aside for it, and the mental space you need will come.
A prayer corner under an eaves roof, there's a flock of paper doves on the back wall, in front is a table with two books, an icon, and two lot candles on it. Hanging over the wall is a wooden cross. There's a kneeler below.

grown ass adults dedicating their lives to the pursuit of a “right” to torture trans and queer kids reflects a pathetic and pitiable life. that other adults would enable that effort is reprehensible.

and don’t even *try* to tell me that any of this is Christian. it isn’t.

This moment had us all in tears!

At the first Friends Meeting of Washington (DC) Pride Month worship this year, a weeping Friend shared, “This meeting makes me a better person. Your queerness makes me a better person.” As trans & queer people face renewed enmity, a safe & welcoming spiritual center is imperative to their survival.

Cooler months mean switching out the crystal candlesticks with the silver ones because I’m not some godless heathen who entertains with seasonally inappropriate candleware.

1. 4 months ago, The Supreme Court gave families a right to opt out of LGBTQ+ education in schools.

Now, in Montgomery County, Maryland, where the case originated, the results are in.

Only 43 families out of 160,000 students have exercised that new right.

We reflected on the spot in the Gospel of Matthew where Jesus declares that everyone before him is “my mother and my brothers.” We discussed Psalm 121 (my favorite!), how being watched over by some other force when natal family fails offers solace. We reaffirmed our support for each other. So proud!

But our chosen ancestors have a different story. The chapel was built on the site of an earlier chapel that hosted funerals for people with AIDS, something our meetinghouse has in common. St. Thomas has also been affirming since the 1970s. I hope our chosen ancestors were proud.

In worship, I mused over how our 400 year old Quaker and Anglican ancestors were probably spinning in their graves over this co-mingling. How they might spin in unison over our queerness.

Last night the queer Quakers decamped to St. Thomas Episcopal, as our meetinghouse was filled with Yom Kippur observances by the Jewish congregation that shares our space. We met in the Bishop Gene Robinson Chapel, so definitely no pressure to be queerly spiritual!

i haven't paid enough attention to #shutdown discourse to know why it's happening, but assume it's a divide between "we want to strip away all rights" and "ok but can't we strip away rights with, like, twinkle lights" because there is no serious elected opposition here

Looking forward to reading about my dear sainted husband.

And if you
1) look like Sal,
2) are roughly my age or younger,
3) are tormented,
4) have ever posed for a room-sized nude photograph,
please inquire within.

the booker prize judges make a lot of fuss about having to read 153 books. but assuming an average weight of 750g per book, that comes in at 115kg of literature - or just under the weight of a single adult male ostrich
