Today, the #scholcommlab published a Statement of Support for PACBI Principles. With it, I reject my university's (SFU's) complicity in the ongoing genocide in Gaza, and call them out for restricting my ability to direct the work of @pkp.sfu.ca in a principled way. www.scholcommlab.ca/pacbi/

It is *so* exciting to see HHMI's new preprint policy. HHMI researchers are now required to post initial and revised preprints under CC-BY licenses. Best of all - the policy lets HHMI put preprints at the center of its research assessment strategy. Learn more:

Anyone have experience submitting support requests to @signal.org ? I didn't get an email confirmation that it went through, and no idea what to expect in terms of turnaround time
juancommander.scholcommlab.ca
Not only that, we cannot focus attention on the different issues at play. E.g., We don't just "want to focus on the freely accessible facet of OA," we also want to point to inequalities, extractive practices, etc. Precise language allows us to draw distinctions—not all open achieves the same goals

This moment from our latest episode with science writer @edyong209.bsky.social is 🔥

We asked Ed — how do we talk up the benefits of science in the face of government cuts? He told us that's the wrong approach. 🧪

PKP is behind Open Journal Systems, the most widely-used free open source journal management system, which can be used to liberate us from Elsevier and all the rest of the profiteers! #openaccess

SWEET SPOT: 50% open access is the sweet percentage for publishers. They can charge 50% APC and stil charge 100% subscriptions, because the subscription never goes down. Also
different countries have different concerns and languages. This is an issue for more than 50%OA globally #OASPA2025

The academic system needs to take the work of building community-led, open source/access initiatives much more seriously as a valid and vital form of academic labour

Very much appreciate @juancommander.scholcommlab.ca's reminder to us, at the start of what promises to be a dynamic post-lunch panel at #OASPA2025 that @pkp.sfu.ca is, at root, a scholar and research led initiative
A panel of four on a stage, framed by stained glass windows and an OASPA slide

I couldn't agree more. This is the top leadership role at **humble brag** one of the most impactful organizations in #scholcomm. Reach out if you have questions! (cc #OASPA2025)

Probably the best role in open scholarly publishing.
