I am thrilled to share the cover of my forthcoming book, I Have Avenged America: Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Haiti’s Fight for Freedom (June 2025 @yalepress.bsky.social)

The stunning painting is by Haitian-American artist Ulrick Jean-Pierre (ulrickjeanpierre.com)

“222 years ago today, Jean-Jacques Dessalines led Haitian forces into the Battle of Vertières, where they defeated the French and gained independence.” ⚽🇭🇹
"Let's go to Haiti, and how history repeats itself."

This moment last night on Paramount+'s Golazo Show
narrating the November 18, 1803 Battle of Vertières and connecting it to Haiti's qualification for the World Cup was perhaps my favorite moment of sporting commentary ever.

man we should bring back the pamphlet
Hey historians 🗃️: Do you know of presses that publish short books (around 30K words / 90 pages plus notes)? I have been working on an article project that could easily turn into an great micro-history of that length, but I'm not sure it would make it to the usual full 60-90K words...

Haiti is up 2-0 on Nicaragua in their final World Cup qualifying match.

If they win and Honduras remain tied with Costa Rica as they are at halftime, Haiti would qualify.

Haiti hasn’t been in the World Cup since 1974.

For the sports sickos, Suriname and Curaçao are playing in separate matches with chances to make the World Cup for the first time ever, and Haiti is in one trying to get there for the first time since 1974.

That’s great. There are a lot of attempts in citizen media etc. Even attempts in docs etc. But a well-funded, well-positioned, deeply researched glossy film or miniseries remains out of reach. I think that would be a good story. I also hope the glossy big budget number gets made one day.

So many people have tried to make this. At this point the story of why it hasn’t been made might be more of a mirror than making it.
