Fall Forever : The Crossing Guard

A Halloween night scene shows three children in homemade costumes—a Dalmatian, a superhero, and a mad scientist—looking terrified at a crosswalk. Behind them, is their poor, run-down neighborhood. Across the street, the homes are well-kept and warmly lit with Halloween decorations and string lights, hinting that the better candy awaits on that side. There are no automatic death sentences for any crime in the United States.

The issue being talked about here as if it might be ok to kill boatloads of people if they are smuggling drugs or cartel members is accepting the framing of fascists.

They want Venezuela's oil. The US has been vilifying the country & it's leaders for decades after its former president did the unthinkable: he nationalized the county's oil & mineral resources [gasp!] so the profits would go to its own citizens instead of going to the US & London stock market!

There’s no authorization for the use of military force. The Congress has not given that to the president. He hasn’t asked.

Why frame the issue as if it's reasonable to murder alleged drug smugglers? It's not!

They're unarmed civilians.
Killing unarmed civilians is morally repugnant & violates US law, international law & the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ)

It's established that the boat passengers were unarmed. Killing unarmed civilians is morally repugnant & violates US & international law as well as the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Not probable. They are literally commiting murder.

They're blowing up boatloads of unarmed civilians. That's not just illegal under international law, it's against US civilian & military law. Killing unarmed civilians is a violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), even under orders

It doesn't matter if they're fisherman or drug mules or ordinary citizens or gangs. It's morally repugnant and against both US & international law to blow up boats full of human beings. Even if the boat was full of drugs & operated by gangsters, it's still illegal to kill unarmed civilians. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Democratic Backsliding and the Limits of Civilian Control of the Military

Abstract: Militaries ought to obey the orders of democratic leaders, but what happens when those leaders try to use the military to undo democracy? The standard view among civil-military relations scholars holds that the military has an absolute duty to obey civilian leadership in matters of political disagreement. But this view fails to account for cases of democratic backsliding in which civilian orders directly undermine democratic processes and institutions. Through analysis of recent examples of militaries facing democratic backsliding in the U.S., Brazil, and Israel, the article defines a new category of "democracy-undoing orders" that do not generate a duty of military obedience. It proposes qualifications for when disobedience to such orders is justified while discussing potential challenges and safeguards.

This week in 1988: 1,000+ ACT UP demonstrators shut down the FDA headquarters, demanding (and eventually winning) action on developing HIV/AIDS treatments. ACT UP's militant and creative actions always included powerful visual artwork, and paved the way for movements in the decades to come.

Millionaires & billionaires donors profit less if congress enacts those programs. Therefore, because their donors won't donate to their campaigns if they actually support those programs, Dem leadership & most rank & file members of the Dem caucus oppose these programs too. It's not rocket science.

The Dem platform focuses on "making college affordable," not free college. A small number of leftists like Rashida Tlaib, AOC, Sanders, Presley,Jayapal, support Medicare for All & free college unconditionally.

Dem leadership & rank & file Democrats are dependent on the same donor class as the GOP.

The Democratic Party platform does not include support for universal heathcare or free college. Dem leadership seeks to incrememtally lower costs thru the ACA, while maintaining our current insurance system. They do not want to create a single payer heathcare system. They also oppose free college.
