Another valley scene! Fall means the return of cloud cover, and with that comes more interesting transitory lighting effects.

The only cardboard or equally fragile stuff I’ve seen is like, “my landlord did an illegal wall repair”.

Drywall isn’t perfect for sure but I am curious how much the standards or material science has changed.
justinoaksford.bsky.social
I’m curious about this- everywhere I’ve ever lived has used gypsum and unless something was built illegally, I believe it should be using gypsum drywall or something equivalent.

You can definitely hammer through it but punching through it would probably break a knuckle?

There is also a dynamic where an upscale luxury hotel from 1919 is now affordable housing, so a lot of people experience a type of ornamentation and aesthetic splendor and solidity and apply that baseline to modern affordable construction. (And here I’m not referring to residents but the neighbors)
justinoaksford.bsky.social
But generally I am skeptical that “housing was always built better in the past”. Undoubtedly there are areas this might be clearly true, but I think it’s kind of a NIMBY sentiment and is not deployed by people fighting to improve building quality, but who are fighting building anything new.

I have also seen/heard of brand new 2023 built places with water damage before anyone has moved in

I suspect generally people experience bad craftsmanship in some new builds but the bad craftsmanship in old builds are torn down after a few decades, so folks tend to experience the “best” of the old

I understand that in 1900 we clear cut old growth forest for wood so dense it doesn’t rot and lasts hundreds of years but those places are filled with asbestos, lead, failing pipes and bad insulation. I lived in a 1908 place with a new heat pump that couldn’t stay above 59 in winter.

I wonder where the “older housing was built better” sentiment comes from. I’ve lived in places from the 1900s, the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and obvs 90’s, 00’s and 10’s and far and away the “best” ones have been the most recent 20 years

“Our transit infrastructure project budgets are out of control!”

“Maybe instead of deep bore tunnels that add 5-10 minutes to travel time and billions to cost we can just cut and cover?”

“And close lanes of car traffic?? haha good one. We only do that for highway expansions!”

I just can't get over the differences in scale between Ballard Link's Westlake Station as proposed and the original Westlake Station, off to the left.
Ballard Link's Westlake has two separate entrances underneath separate buildings, with one showing a long tunnel to get to the train guideway. They are at least five stories deeper than the original Westlake, which is tiny and only around 10-15% of the size

I’m sorry this is hilarious. How bad of an incumbent do you have to be for optimism to be up and yet voters in an odd year primary still want to dump you?

Another riot in Minneapolis was instigated by a right-wing agitator who was convicted of shooting into a police station and setting it on fire, in the hopes of starting a civil war.

A self-described "boogaloo boi," he drove up from Texas to create a false flag.

The very first riot after a George Floyd protest was started by a white supremacist nicknamed "Umbrella Man."

He spraypainted "free shit" on an AutoZone, broke the windows, and encouraged others to come in. abcnews.go.com/amp/US/man-h...

🧵 Trump is criminally invading states under false pretenses. His supporters are trying to instigate violence by dressing as antifa and committing crimes.

In this clip from Portland, Joey Gibson of "Patriot Prayer" and his fiancée, Lindsey Nichols, tried to cause trouble before being forced away.
