A few minutes ago in the House:

- Speaker Mike Johnson officially cancels votes next week, extending the House recess through a fourth week

- House Republicans block Democrats from passing a bill to pay the troops during the shutdown, ensuring they will miss paychecks next week
House Press Gallery: During today's pro forma session, the Clerk read a message from the Speaker designating Tuesday, October 14 through Sunday, October 19 as a district work period. Punchbowl's Briana Reilly: House gaveled in and out of its pro forma just now w/o recognizing Rep Elfreth, who was seeking to UC a mil pay bill from Rep Sykes.

Elfreth told reporters after that House Dems stand “ready and willing to take” up standalone legislation to pay troops.

"President Trump continued to describe Portland as a city on fire Friday even as residents enjoyed the first fall rain and the lone demonstrator at the city’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement building was dressed as a pink Care Bear."

Sometimes there is a good sentence or two in the NYT.

If I were a DC reporter, I’d consider maybe pressing Johnson on how he reconciles these two statements.
@atrupar.com

Mike Johnson: "We're so angry about it. I mean, l'm a very patient guy, but l've had it with these people. The theory we have right now -- they have a hate America rally that's scheduled for October 18 on the National Mall. It's the pro-Hamas wing and antifa people ..." @atrupar.com

Mike Johnson: "People have got to stop framing simple policy disagreements in terms of existential threats to our democracy. You can't call the other side fascists and enemies of the state and not understand that there are some deranged people in our society who will take that as cues to act."

Bill filed in #Florida Legislature would make every single college & university name one street after Charlie Kirk. And the bill even specifies WHICH street at each one. (But the governor doesn't want streets used for political messages, which is why no rainbows!) www.tallahassee.com/story/news/l...

A new bill would make all of Florida's public state universities and colleges rename one roadway on their campuses after Charlie Kirk.

We have two EVs that we charge at home (except for road trips). We have time of use charging and pay about 1.8* cents per mile. Compared to a 30 mpg ICE vehicle, that's about $0.60 per gallon currently.

*We also have solar panels + battery, so it averages out to less than half of that.

We have two EVs. Currently my wife charges them at work at a rate of (for our commutes/typical driving) 17 cents for every 4.5 miles. For a 30 mpg car, this comes out to about $1.13 per gallon of gas equivalent.
jamellebouie.net
we charge our hyundai ioniq 5 around once every two to three weeks at a muncipal charger and i’d say it runs about $9 for 250 miles of range.

If she's okay with it, then no big deal.

But (and this will be no surprise to you), for *me* practicing for something that isn't worthwhile (and taking away time to actually learn) is a big problem. (Of course I continuously fought and lost that battle over and over again when I was teaching.)

Does she want to take it again? If not, just opt out.

(I don't know the rules there, but as far as I know they can't force you to take it. I mean, optional vaccines but mandatory PSAT seems like a stretch.)

Looking forward to all of the Jerry Jones style thumbs up people will be giving to ICE.

Well, she voted for the CR, so I"m not sure you do.

Here are the FACTS. House Republicans have:

Worked 12 days since August.

Voted to cut Medicaid & take away health care.

Tried unsuccessfully to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Failed to stop huge premium increases.

Mike Johnson: "Let me look right into the camera and tell you very clearly: Republicans are the ones concerned about healthcare. Republicans are the party working around the clock everyday to fix healthcare. This is not talking points for us: we've done it."

I wrote about all the lived experiences and strange structures of modern society — many of which we take for granted — that were literally impossible for all previous generations of Homo sapiens. www.forkingpaths.co/p/we-are-dif...
We are different from all other humans in history
Countless experiences that have become routine for us are unprecedented in the history of our species. Here's why that matters.

I could write several blog entries about this, but I’ll just focus on one here: No, Dems aren’t putting anyone earning 4x the poverty level on Medicaid; the cutoff under the ACA is 138% FPL.

And if they were, that could actually cost less than the subsidies provided to enrollees earning 138-400%.
atrupar.com
KERNEN: Watch your colleagues in some of the red states wimp out and decide that we're gonna pretend that we care and we're gonna renew these subsidies

HASSETT: Right. Well, a lot of people share your opinion about Obamacare

Enjoyed spending some time with two former students who were in town for their 30th high school reunion.

The only problem is that means they graduated high school 30 years ago, which means I'm....really old.
