Also, this.

Resist authoritarianism 👊

There will likely be much hollering from MAGA today about Trump not winning the Nobel peace prize.

Just so we are all clear, the deadline for nominations for the 2025 Nobel was in January.

Trump was ineligible, this year.

Better luck in 2026, I guess.

😉

The Alberta government stopped tracking class sizes, and then the province's population growth really took off. @robsonfletcher.com set out to find out how the numbers of teachers compare to that growth, with the limited info available

Class size/composition is a strike issue.

ANALYSIS | Alberta stopped tracking class sizes. Then it changed its funding formula. Now, it's a teachers' strike issue | CBC News
Get a rough idea of how much Alberta’s teaching staff has grown compared to how much student enrolment has grown since the funding formula for school boards was changed.

Absolutely. Which is why when I ask conservatives how this government has improved their day to day lives, all they can come back with is “the transgenders”.

But when asked how that specifically affects their lives, they can’t come up with an answer.

I just want Albertans who still support this UCP government to give me a real reason.

The UCP have made everything worse. Skyrocketing utilities & insurance rates. Healthcare on the verge of collapse. Teachers on strike over working conditions.

They’ve made an awful mess.

The Premier of Alberta is up to her perpetually confused brow in scandals; the teachers are on strike and there’s no end to that in sight, we’re still waiting on the report about the procurement scandal …

The pipeline is THEATRE. It’s not real. It’s a distraction, and it’s a cover - that’s it.
kikkiplanet.bsky.social
Oh, #ableg & #cdnpoli

I hope you’ve all seen this. If not, you should.

Eby is 💯 correct. This “pipeline” is more Danielle Theatre. It’s a means to eventually blame BC & Ottawa for her gov’ts failure. It’s a means to distract from the AHS scandal. It’s pandering to her base.

IT. IS. NOT. REAL.
hollyhoye.bsky.social
Danielle Smith loves to pick fights but if I were her I might have thought twice about picking one with a guy who is 6’7”, spits facts, and absolutely nailed the real reason she’s shilling for a pipeline.

It’s like you’re in my living room. Because my husband has been yelling that for a week.
kikkiplanet.bsky.social
Well, it’s not urbanites keeping her in power. We don’t vote for this party.

But the rural vote has more consequence than the urban vote, here. So Edmonton gets punished for voting NDP, & the ruralites dictate policy.

Gonna need a reverse image search for the internal organ I just laughed out so I know if I need it or can just put it in the food scraps bin.
kikkiplanet.bsky.social
Speak on it. I’ll be happy if they carry this dead weight all the way into the next election. He’s never going to be the Prime Minister. So let ‘em, you know?

I suppose I’m just a bit stunned that the CPC is perfectly fine holding onto the guy who blew a 20 pt lead, AND lost his own seat.
kikkiplanet.bsky.social
Carney isn’t Trudeau. And Poilievre’s messaging isn’t connecting with the majority of voters, at this point.

In fact, now that we’re having to deal with the geriatric toddler that is Trump, Poilievre comes across as anti-Canadian. And it’s a turnoff to voters.
kikkiplanet.bsky.social
He is. And he carries himself like a statesman, in a political era when statesman are in very short supply.

They review all of the testimony - and that’s usually from transcripts that can take a while to prepare - and they research case law that is submitted by counsel, review details of the case, perhaps look at case law on their own … and then they’ll write their decision.

It’s a LOT of work.
kikkiplanet.bsky.social
The judge had a lot of evidence and case law to review, so this is about the right time frame.
kikkiplanet.bsky.social
Oh, absolutely. That’s why there are several different sections in the CC dealing with this crime. If the mischief causes loss of life, that can be a life sentence.
kikkiplanet.bsky.social
Just for context, I worked in the legal field for nearly 2 decades.

The sentences handed down today are in keeping with the both the convictions, and the sentencing guidelines as set forth in 430 (2) & (3).
kikkiplanet.bsky.social
The most common sentencing for a first offense under $5k is a fine and probation.

Both Barber and Lich got far more than that.
kikkiplanet.bsky.social
For what? They were charged with and convicted of criminal mischief - a non violent offense.

Show me any other first time offenders who were sentenced to prison for criminal mischief.

Sentencing requirements aren’t based on whether or not we like those being sentenced 🤷‍♀️
kikkiplanet.bsky.social
I mean people are upset about the sentence because no prison time. But these were non-violent crimes, and the sentencing is in keeping with the law.

Besides, what’s a more perfect consequence for idiots who protested a mythical “lockdown” than being sentenced to a very real one?

It’s perfect 😂
kikkiplanet.bsky.social
The irony of Lich and Barber being sentenced to a year long lockdown in their respective homes isn’t lost on me 😂😂😂
kikkiplanet.bsky.social
If his polling doesn’t improve markedly before Christmas, we might see that all change come January.

There are likely more than a couple leadership hopefuls staying quiet now, but if they think there’s an opportunity, I don’t doubt they will start making noise and acquiring allies.
kikkiplanet.bsky.social
I entirely agree.

Effective opposition is vital to the Westminster Parliamentary system.

Poilievre isn’t just failing his own party. He’s failing Canadians, who deserve an opposition that holds gov’t to account, not one that serves up a daily bombastic rant for the party base & the cameras.
kikkiplanet.bsky.social
I think you’ve nailed it. He’s dug himself - and the CPC - so far into a hole that I don’t know how he climbs out.

And how does he use “common sense conservative ideals” to oppose a PM who is far more red tory than he is liberal?

He’s caught in the trap he and Jenni Byrne created.
kikkiplanet.bsky.social
Kenney is definitely waiting in the wings to take a run at the leadership. And he’d likely win. Jason Kenney is probably the best campaigner in Canadian politics.

But Kenney is also very much opposed to the alt-right hijacking of the CPC. He could cause major party drama.
