Thanks to @technologyreview.com and Finian Hazen (who was a student in my special seminar @buffett.northwestern.edu) for this profile of our work @citizenlab.ca
“It’s [Citizen Lab] one of the few institutions that investigate cyberthreats exclusively in the public interest, and in doing so, it has exposed some of the most egregious digital abuses of the past two decades.”
Meet the man hunting the spies in your smartphone
Ronald Deibert and his research group, the Citizen Lab, have rigorously worked to unveil alarming digital threats for the past two decades. Now, he warns, this kind of work is under threat.

There have already been 25 data center cancellations or postponements this month, according to @macroedgeres.bsky.social.

That's nearly as many as the previous 6 months combined.

This is so grim. Science isn’t just something nerds do, but the foundation of the modern world. What the Trump regime has done to US science will harm Americans for generations.
‘Shattered’: US scientists speak out about how Trump policies disrupted their careers
Researchers lay bare the human toll of lay-offs, funding cuts and attacks on science one year after the president’s return to the White House.

For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.
Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

This is why there is no free speech without anonymous speech.

This is why online ID checks / age verification is incompatible with the 1st amendment and human rights.

This is why "make everyone use their real names" is not a real solution to online hate & harm

SNK has proven my belief (which has been proven over and over again) that video gamers should be more okay with things just ending. There doesn't need to be comebacks for the corporate names and logos you liked as a kid. Most of the people who made those things good don't even work there anymore.

Modern SNK is the perfect illustration of top-level corporate stupidity ruining all it touches. The people steering the ship are completely divorced from what longtime fans, the market, and (likely) their own employees want

When I say Trump can't cancel elections, I don't mean constitutionally, I mean in the real world he doesn't & won't have enough control to do that. He may be able to influence Trumpist-controlled states to cancel their elections, but all that'll do is deliver Congress to states he doesn't influence
Trump says a lot of deranged shit, but, per this Reuters article — and the threats of invoking the Insurrection Act in Minnesota this morning — he is very clearly exploring how to cancel the midterms.
