Since I wasn’t hosting our family’s evening gathering, I took advantage of the day to make the season’s fruitcakes. A double batch made a large loaf each for myself & my brother in law and 6 smaller loaves for my mother & friends. These will get a weekly basting with whisky until they are gifted.

Today I give thanks for life's bounty, our freedoms, & communities that give me joy. May you be with the people you love. I also acknowledge our nation's complicated history, where one culture's victory was another's loss. We still grapple with the basic truth that all of us are inherently worthy.

#Bird of the Day: Wild Turkey (WITU)
I have to laugh because although there were multiple opportunities, I failed to get any decent photos of the beautiful wild turkeys in Carmel Valley. Sometimes they were too far away, or they were close but I was seeing them through the windows of our moving bus,

Olive oil chocolate cake ready for tomorrow. I’ll post a recipe review after we’ve tasted it, but that glaze is to die for.

Monterey photo review complete!
Down to ~2700 pics (from 8500+), organized by species. 685 photos exported for Birds of the Day; 170 photos chosen to share with my fellow travelers.
I had a fabulous time exploring this astoundingly rich natural area, met some great people, & pushed my boundaries.

#Bird of the Day: Great Blue Heron (GBHE)
When traveling on my birding excursions, part of the joy is finding birds that are new or uncommon to me, and to learn about them and how they fit into the local habitats. But another pleasure is seeing familiar birds in unfamiliar settings and to realize

🍽️ Kitchen experiment: rendering lard.
Every fall my sister gets pork from a hog raised by a local Oregon farm. Recently she offered me some of the packages of pork fat that she had no use for. I thought it would be an interesting experiment to render it into lard. I should start with the disclaimer

#Bird of the Day: Cedar Waxwings (CEDW)
Are you a fan of whole-berry cranberry sauce? Or do you prefer the gelatinous wonder that is cranberry sauce in a can? I’m Team Sliced Sauce (mostly due to nostalgia), but I’ll eat both styles with the traditional (American) Thanksgiving feast. These Cedar

Today, after months of requests, I toured the Broadview ICE Processing Facility. I want to share what I saw.

The facility has no food vendor, no medical care, and detainees have to use toilets in the middle of shared cells. These are in no way suitable conditions to be holding anyone — period.

#Bird of the Day: Great Egret (GREG)
Sometimes, birds overlapping in human spaces make me laugh. As you can see, this Great Egret was hanging out on the deck of the restaurant I chose in Cannery Row, Monterey. As I was a solo diner for an early lunch, I had my pick of tables at The Fish Hopper, and

I made great progress on the Monterey photos this rainy weekend! Started with 8501 on the camera & ~200 on the phone.
I still need to review: 2263 on the camera + ~100 on phone
🪶 Good enough to keep so far: 1487 (~25% of the ones I've reviewed). Eventually I'll do one more pass to cull similar pics.

Most of my days in Pacific Grove started out with brilliantly blue cloudless skies, warm & windy. But often the fog would move in starting in the afternoon, changing the mood completely as the gulls circled the rocks & waves. The moisture provided by these fog banks is critical to local ecosystems.

🧵 You may not know it, but old cemeteries are often great spots for #birding. Usually quiet and with large trees and expanses of grass! During my walking days in Pacific Grove, I discovered my hotel was a short distance from El Carmelo Cemetery (which also seemed to abut a large golf course). Other
