During the budget hearings, we heard directly from the mayor's office that there was no strategic plan for 2028.

Nearly six months later, with less than 1,000 days to go, we're still "headed in the direction of developing that plan"
"I can't wait to hear how organizers plan to "deliver a major event in accordance with the highest global human rights standards" when the federal government is kidnapping people off LA's streets."
Torched readers know I have been begging for a vision statement from the city for the past 1.5 years. But with less than three years to go, I was hoping for some goals beyond those outlined in the games agreement. This vision really struggles to articulate any tangible benefits for the city
1,000 days later
Unfortunately, the mayor's vision — which feels about 1,000 days too late — is so light on substance that it's hard to see how LA's megaevent future materializes

Truly good luck to folks running against Susan Collins but I did not need the Janet Mills campaign to text me about it from SIX different numbers

I don't always reply to the pitches I receive from publicists (because I have a job that I do and if I did, I would never get to do my job). But here is a tip for aspiring publicists: Critics do not "write a Rotten Tomatoes review." No critics do this.

My first thought was “wow I hope this guy didn’t give out his name because he could absolutely be charged” and yup, he is correct to stay anonymous.

This man’s account is shocking. His neighbors’ situation is shocking. The entire Chicago raid is shocking.

I wish I was surprised that Deadline claims it asked questions that were actually asked by me and other journalists at this James Gunn press conference. No one from Deadline even *submitted questions* for it (and I know, because I moderated). This is just brazen and sad.

Similarly describing him as an "expert on antifa" rather than an "antifascism researcher" further legitimates antifa as a proper noun in a way that makes zero sense
you'd think a prominent news outlet like the New York Times might mention that "antifa" isn't an actual organization in a long story about antifa, but nope!

and the subhead helps props up a false claim this professor was up to something seedy as something up for debate

1. Anti-trans outrage is losing its bite.

Last week, Elon Musk led a mass boycott campaign to get trans characters removed from shows on the platform.

Major conservatives joined in.

Now, we have the result: the boycott was a fizzle, and Netflix stock is up.

This is so damn scary. The book claimed that Jeffrey Epstein was the one who introduced Donald and Melania. Now the CEO of Harper UK is out.
In other news Charlie Redmayne, the long serving CEO of HC in the UK, resigned yesterday.
"At a moment of Hollywood contraction, when there are already too few exciting comedies on the TV calendar, there’s a real sadness in putting a giant bummer asterisk next to one of the few good ones."

the singular failure of the Biden era was not jailing Trump and his high-level coup plotters for that crime while Biden controlled the federal government; this failure is manifest now in Trump having blanket permission to rule as a king from SCOTUS and the default loyalty of federal police. Hell!

It’s not our first turn with authoritarianism (Jim Crow; internment) but also this took about 8 years, with an assist from Biden in his refusal to impose consequences on an attempted coup because he didn’t want to face political backlash
The speed by which America collapsed into authoritarian rule is the most shocking thing. Faster than other contemporary cases. Faster than the alleged “dictator’s playbook” suggests. So fast we *shouldn’t* call it “competitive authoritarianism.” It may be worse than that.
"The backlash shouldn’t be dismissed as an overreaction. . . . The pattern is always the same: Technology doesn’t have to be good to be disruptive, only viable enough for corporations to monetize. The concern isn’t that Norwood will “land” a role but that the system might be ready to cast her."
Tilly Norwood exists to probe what audiences will tolerate and to remind Hollywood, already anxious and penny-pinching, that the line between performance and product has never been thinner.

Increasingly, I feel as if these self-proclaimed coalition builders talking about "winning the middle" aren't talking about the people they hope to win over. Rather, they're talking about themselves, and defining what it will take to keep them in the tent. Not opposed to purity tests; issuing them.

It's fascinating and revealing how many centrists think refusing to compromise on human rights to gain the support of bigots represents a "political purity test," yet also think that a bigot saying "I won't join you unless you accommodate my bigotry" does NOT represent a "political purity test."

Just going through this list again there are so many red flags. We still don't have an after-action report from the January fires with updated evacuation plans. There is no plan for more shade. There is no plan to keep LA clean. We are unable to pick up all our trash on a regular non-Olympics day!
In a city with a billion-dollar budget hole unable to provide basic services now, what happens when millions more people are here? Just thinking about the trash alone is stressing me out.

And who's paying for the heat injury prevention plans when it's 100 degrees for a week in the summer of 2028?

I was back at 26 Federal Plaza today, where an ICE agent violently threw this bereft woman to the ground in front of her kids. She had not touched him. She did not pose any threat. She had to be taken to the hospital. (🎥: Elias Eliahu)
