"As If Proust Dipped His Madeleine in LSD"
Thank you Steven van Ammel for this fabulous 4**** review for Verbruikt Licht (aka @cbeditions.bsky.social Spent Light) published by Koppernik in the Netherlands & Belgium. Best headline ever!
“Alsof Proust zijn madeleine in lsd sopt”: ‘Verbruikt licht’ van Lara Pawson is een boek vol excessen dat onder de huid kruipt ★★★★☆
Als de pepermolen aan een handgranaat doet denken en de kookwekker martelfantasieën oproept, weet je dat je te maken hebt met een boek over trauma.

During a recent trip to Antwerp, I was appalled to learn that locals are advised AGAINST eating free range eggs due to the chickens' likely contact with PFAS. One free range egg a week is OK, but Antwerpians are strongly advised to eat eggs laid only by hens that do NOT eat off the ground.

Inclusion, bad
Exclusion, good
This week, I withdrew from a speaking engagement at a public university because they sent me a list of prohibited “words & concepts.” I will not humor this censorship. It does a disservice to the stories I’m discussing & the audience, who deserve unfettered access to information & conversation.

If you’d like to learn more about Mary Bishop & her extraordinary work, I wrote this for The Wellcome Collection in 2023.
But more than that, I would recommend looking for yourself at some of her work which is available to view online through their catalogue

I'm not going to lie: this is a reassuring post to read. Thanks Caroline, thanks @smallpublishers.bsky.social, thanks @cbeditions.bsky.social 🙏🏼 😘😉
Just finished Lara Pawson's Spent Light (bought at @smallpublishers.bsky.social) and it's every bit as good as everyone else says: unnervingly direct, startling, vivid

Bradley Wiggins wrote a book in four months. I mean, fair enough if I can't keep up with him cycling round the block, but FOUR MONTHS to write a book! Stop it!

Baba Chokwe Lumumba used to say, "If you don't love the people sooner or later you'll betray the people."

Mayor Mamdani will face challenges. But his win will shake open new possibilities. What's clear is that he loves the people; he loves the city; he loves us. And that's the imperative start.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 5: Vito Marcantonio

There are many who dismiss our vision for New York as impossible. To them, I say we need look only to our past for proof of how we can shape the future.

Tomorrow is Election Day. And this is the final Until It's Done of our campaign.

Finally watched this. I've read Philip Clark's criticism here @artreview.bsky.social and couldn't disagree more. I thought it fascinating, deeply upsetting & very important viewing. Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat by Johan Grimonprez. Watch it.

One of the aspects I like most about this prize is the solidarity between the writers. I felt the guys on stage, last night, were generous & thoughtful & responsive to one another. Definitely a northern feel to the Goldie this year! Good luck, all. X
@benpester.bsky.social, Sarah Hall, @cdrose.bsky.social & @ericawgnr.bsky.social on stage last night @southbankcentre.bsky.social.

Colwill Brown, @yrsadaleyward.bsky.social & Charlie Porter contributed in virtual form.

Thanks to everyone for a stimulating evening of readings and discussion.
