I remember creatives defending their positions of authority on the premise of fun purely through THEIR feeling.

Then we got into articulating it a bit better. Fun means a lot of things whether you're playing Tomb Raider or Siege. Are there gameplay loops in those? Yes. But that's not all there is.
While it is absolutely right that it's done harm, the "it's just fun" was also a buzzy harmful epidemic in the industry.

The idea of 'game loop' was to get out of saying that a game was simply fun and identify it better with more specific language. But this lead to being a buzz as well

And don't get me wrong: our gut does a good job of giving an initial consideration! So I understand folks using anecdotes. But the gut is neither sufficient on its own, nor unbiased.
I wish this was the culture more in Community (and the video game industry). Not purely to reduce players to numbers, but to interpret better. Simultaneously to push the industry away from vibes-based decisions and inform ourselves before drastically undercutting players.
At the time this was profound. Perhaps profoundly different from the previous status quo, but by modern standards a rudimentary snapshot.

Now? I have equations from researchers to understand factors of engagement over time and pop models. It helps ground things substantially.
There's both a serious bit of wisdom AND naivety with that. Certainly some players will voice things, but is that indicative of the whole? Do they speak for everyone? Are they "right"?

So in an attempt to have SOME form of empirical data, I got analytics for our blogs. Viewership. Bounce rates!
I remember the very first Community task I inherited was maintaining a series of blogs on various subjects (UGC, Updates, Reveals, etc.). When I asked how I'd know if they were doing well, the response was "The players will let you know"
🧡 It still amazes me how little education material there is within the Community/PlayerExperience profession.

I know too many who's only tools available are vibes-based attempting to be some sort of bellweather.

Creatives dealing with production people. Yes you need to update your tasks. No we're not trying to throttle the creative process. Please leave the attitude at the door.
I'd love for designers especially to be mindful of this (or anyone we directly collaborate with). If you admit to general contempt for the discipline even before we start to work together, well then it gets real awkward for us you know? And it's hard to trust you'll keep our interests at heart.
I'm going to be honest it is unpleasant to work in the discipline within the games industry that people seem to have especially-reserved venom for. Nobody seems really intent on calling out, eg, video game sountracks they think are middling as if it's really important to yell about.
In earnest, I've been marveling at the writing of this game. Outer Worlds 1 was fun as a take on the post-apocalyptic theme of capitalism. But OW2 feels refined and deep. I'm too early to feel definitive about this yet, but it's giving me Mass Effect 2 vibes as a development success.
Outer Worlds 2 having a radio song in the style of Hamilton singing is next level writing. Lin-Manuel Miranda singing about Auntie Cleo is buckwild.

centrists will tell you to your face that we all need to abandon identity issues, and focus on kitchen table issues instead and yet when a leftist candidate runs a generational campaign based on kitchen table issues, it's the centrists weaponizing identity politics to smear the leftist.
Like many political grifting, there's a trend to invent a problem (including those already solved) so that you can sell the solution.

They're trying to supply both supply AND demand.

It cannot be made clearer.

If you continue to support the Harry Potter franchise in any way, you are directly funding the removal of trans people's human rights in the UK.

Y'all told these motherfuckers it was OK to let trans people lose their rights. Now they're banking on people letting them abandon everyone who looks vaguely Latino as well as actual immigrants. Who are y'all advocating for moderation gonna abandon next?
