Today I wrote about my path to publication on my substack. Ups and downs and in betweens! Spider, Spider is my third or fourth book, depending on how you count, so this is how I got there (part 1 - up to getting my agent).

I somehow managed to miss this when it first came out. Lots of exciting books here!

It's only two months until my book Spider, Spider is out - it's a gothic historical revenge story and if that's your kind of thing you can follow my substack where today I had a ramble about arsenic and a look forward to 2026.

Make art. It doesn't have to be "good"--it's all good--it just has to be real.

Here’s my list of things the public doesn’t seem to know, but historians broadly agree upon 👇
I’ve got loads!

- Medieval people washed regularly, drank water, and didn’t have rotten teeth
- WW1 did not end in 1918
- Queen Victoria was a horndog
- Ancient Egyptians invented Egyptology by excavating their own ancient monuments
- We know more about Shakespeare than many other famous Tudors

Happy Yule to all who Yule.

(I tried to put y'all in there - it appeals to the puntastic poet in me but I just couldn't do it. As a Brit I already say dude an inappropriate amount, importing y'all is a step too far.)

I've had a few 'what do you do' convs recently, and everyone on hearing I'm an author comes out with "so how do you come up with ideas?", just like every book or movie about a writer has them staring numbly into space because they don't have an idea for the next book. And look, that is Not It.

Currently reading: 'Estella's Revenge' by Barbara Havelocke. A darkly imaginative book about the life of Miss Havisham's daughter. Gorgeous! Making me want to re-read Great Expectations. @authorbarbara.bsky.social

This year I've been in a reading slump, on and off. September's been really bad - I have only finished one audio book and no paper books. Some months I read six books, other months, eh, some pages, I guess.

Do any of you find your reading mojo fluctuates? What do you do when the mojo is low?

It's tempting to track word count but it really isn't a reliable indicator of progress (though if no words at all are getting written... 😬). Today I only added about 900w to my draft but two scenes are 100x times better and are finished (by which I mean i have a first draft). Progress!
