Hope you're enjoying your weekend!

The next #blog entry isn't a strict article, but the return of the journal-style Letely series where I talk about what I've been enjoying in recent days.

Weeks. Months. It's been a little while since the last one.

I'm curious as to how extensively the Digital Comics reader on the PSP was actually used.

In theory it's really neat: you could purchase and read official Marvel and IDW comics, back in an era when doing so on a portable device was relatively novel (e.g. the first iPhone was only 2 years prior)

They also reference the shop in Phantasy Star 4. It's said it being in the basement in PS4 is because the conditions are ideal for baking. Chaz questions why the storefront also needs to be in the basement, and will quip about it being too dark to see well, but that he assumes the kitchen is clean.

In the original Phantasy Star, there is, bizarrely, a cake shop located in the middle of the Naula Cave dungeon.

This cake shop is referenced in Phantasy Star Online 2, but is so ridiculously rare that it can take hundreds of hours for its event to ever occur.

As in PS1, the shop sells Shortcake.

There are 1500 rules in the scripts governing NPC behaviour in a mostly forgotten open-world Amiga/ST/DOS game called The Adventures of Robin Hood. All affected in real-time by 32 characteristics, what you're doing in the game, your reputation, and the changing of the seasons.
i was going through my X archives and found this by @superpodsaga.com, which I qrt'd at some point years ago

so, let me bring the question back: what is the most useless piece of video game knowledge you know?

Psst, hey! It's a late night on #ScanlineSunday when a stranger on the street calls you over. Without a word, they hand you a disc labeled Bootleg Sampler for Sega Saturn 🪐

This demo disc came with the console and included Sega Rally, World Series Baseball, Clockwork Knight 2, and later on Bug!

When I moved to Japan, I had to leave a lot of my things behind: including my trusty RAP 4 Kai.

It was my first full size arcade stick, and my companion through countless hours across fighters and shmups alike.

I've missed it a lot!
So, say hello to my new RAP V Hayabusa (the V stands for Vewlix!)

Credit where it's due, WRC 4's modeling for different track types (gravel, dirt, tarmac) makes a noticeable difference. Especially when driving the more aggressive WRC class vehicles.
The simcade feel of the physics is actually part of why I'm sticking with the game. Course diversity is a big plus.

[Eat the hose attack] is such a silly in-game choice, made all the better because you have no alternative

In general, I'm doing a lot of eating attacks this session, huh

Now that I've moved on to cleaning up the completionist achievements on Super Bullet Break, I can fool around much more.

I know that objectively, "LSB" and "RSB" are completely sensible names for clicking the analog sticks of a gamepad.

But I grew up with L3/R3, and that's what I'll continue to call them out of habit.

Same goes for those wacky central buttons--they'll always be "Select" and "Start" in my heart.

This is probably my 4th-5th rewrite of this post.

I've seen so many friends / peers get burnt out on learning Japanese.

It's a big undertaking: you're learning an entirely new language /and/ the culture that's inseparable from it.

I wish I could give one-size-fits-all advice or encouragement.

I nominate Nim as 1901 Game of the Year
(and it is videogame related 😁)

Nim is an ancient matchstick game; the modern form had a complete mathematical theory published by C.L. Bouton of Harvard University in 1901... which later was used in the first electromechanical and computer games!

I am excited to announce that my local arcade accepts Docomo dPOINT as payment.

Do you know what this means?

It means Taiko no Tatsujin, Sound Voltex, and freaking TEKKEN are all technically "free with ads"...

At the exchange rate of THREE HUNDRED 30~60 second ads per single credit.

It's a small thing, but I like to play games with weather opposite of whatever's currently going on outside.

In the middle of summer, I was playing Xmas Doom. And now since it's freezing outside, I need a warm, summery game to match.

Good time to resume the Blue Reflection: Second Light new game+.
