True empathy, based on my experience and what people describe in those moments when they are genuinely trying and somewhat succeeding at empathizing with me, is like holding a challenging yoga pose. You know it's good for you, it's using muscles you usually don't, but it's also hard & kind of hurts.

I have been known to deal with tedious nitpicking staff/committee meetings by switching my internal dialogue to David Attenborough commentary
if I find someone infuriating but need to drain away some emotional heat so that I can remain calm while dealing with them, I imagine them as a muppet

I would like some other techniques for these kinds of situations, please share yours
