This guy! Introducing Bluesky folks to Barnaby. We’ve had him nearly a year now. Named after our favorite DCI(s) of the Midsomer Constabulary #midsomermurders

While I’m sad the Tigers didn’t advance, I’m glad Seattle is advancing. We went to a Mariners game this summer and they’ve never won it all.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

News: Bari Weiss just sent a memo to staffers at CBS News asking them to produce a memo explaining "how you spend your working hours—and ideally, what you've made (or are making) that you're most proud of."

One CBS News staffer puts it like this to me: "We just got Elon Musked."

Well, it's official. After our paper last year (onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....), the Slender-billed Curlew is officially declared Extinct today.

Scientists dream of describing new species, not writing their obituary and epitaph, knowing that they are gone forever #ornithology

I’m reading the advance listening copy of “The Gales of November: the untold story of the Edmund Fitzgerald” by @johnubacon.bsky.social on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Fitz’s sinking in Lake Superior - thoroughly enjoyed his book on the Great Halifax Explosion during WWI

Other than recommending Poirot, which I am reading chronologically, I highly recommend the very accessible “Poet, Mystic, Widow, Wife: the Extraordinary Lives of Medieval Women” by Hetta Howes. Probably my favorite read all year.

If we are taking in “trillion” of dollars in tariffs:

1. Why haven’t we paid down a cent of the debt?

2. Why can’t we afford to not fuck millions of people over with expiring insurance subsidies?

3. Why is none of it being used to help the abysmal job market?

I stopped reading the alumni magazine (I couldn’t make head or tales of what it talked about) and donating when IU SLIS got folded into Informatics

Another fast listen via @libro.fm - “The Mystery of the Blue Train” by Agatha Christie. I like comparing the books with the adaptation from the David Suchet Poirot series, and this one had a lot of differences as well! A good deal happens in the books before Poirot even appears!

My parents live in Indiana. I clench when I cross the state line. I feel like progress has regressed as soon as I cross. I am also v. angry with my Alma mater (IU) in the current climate!

Try: absolutely nothing, and then go support indie bookstores instead 📚

I rarely call in sick from work. I have a wonky stomach and decided to take it easy today, because I want to be 100% when we travel to a wedding in Pennsylvania this weekend.

RIP Patricia Routledge. Buckets at half-mast 🫡
Actress patricia Routledge as character Hyacinth Bucket in the Drake meme. The top part of the meme is her shunning a bucket, the bottom half is her lauding a bouquet of flowers.
