Revising your own academic texts requires lots of juggling and sifting through of layers, perspectives and choices. No wonder results can be uneven and less than satisfying.

In January I'm running a mini-course that helps you build a strategic approach to managing the task, adapted to your needs. 👇

Very cool that my home NPR station is doing this. I must stream from Spain more often so I can hear it.
So this is cool: my local NPR station, @kuow.org is broadcasting their station identification in different languages. The first one I caught was Lushootseed, and so at first I thought it was an acknowledgment of the people whose land KUOW is located on. It is that, but also more:
Why KUOW is broadcasting our Legal ID in different languages

Buenísimo todo!

What other languages can use the same verb three times and have the same effect?

Fun #linguistic fact for World Linguistics Day:

If North America had the same linguistic diversity as New Guinea we’d expect Indigenous Americans to speak ~28,000 languages.

A word audit of your WIP is a good idea outside a retreat too. Knowing how much is written + having an idea of what’s left lets you look at the WIP through an objective lens, helps you plan+prioritize writing tasks/steps and can be a great motivator, esp. if you’re feeling anxious or lacking focus.
I'm facilitating a writing retreat at the moment. It's a good idea to do a word audit at the start and at the end. Then you can see how much you've done during the retreat.

solidarity with all colleagues and students at Nottingham who are having their jobs and degrees destroyed by management. the relentless annihilation of language provision in UKHE is something that *every* academic should be calling out and pushing back against.
I am hearing that @uniofnottingham.bsky.social is suspending (i.e shutting down) *all modern language courses* in 2026-27. One of the largest departments in the UK. A shocking short sighted move that damages regional and national prospects @britishacademy.bsky.social @hetanshah.bsky.social

Saddened to hear the news of David Bellos’ passing. He was one of our keynotes last year at #METM24. Glad I had the opportunity to meet him.
RIP to David Bellos whose book Is That a Fish in Your Ear?: Translation and the Meaning of Everything massively contributed to me wanting to become a literary translator. When I was writing my own book about translation, I kept in mind how funny and accessible his book was.
