The Matthew effect (or cumulative advantage) describes the tendency of people who already have money or status to accrue yet more money or status. A poetic German phrase that sums up the concept is der Teufel scheißt immer auf den größten Haufen. It means "the Devil always shits on the largest pile"

For anyone who’s encountered annoyingly noisy people in the quiet carriage/car.
In addition to her writing, Piper does do some limited narration as Lalana Dara. Don’t miss out on her narration of Excuse me, this is the Quiet Car by Cara Mast for the Cast of Wonders podcast.

This is wonderful!
We received a very lovely, generous donation of knitted winter hats so we've made a Winter Warmer Tree to go along with our Winter Coat Rail. 🧶

Anyone needing a cosy hat can take what they need, and if anyone has any spare hats or gloves they can add them to the tree! ❤️

And let's not beat about the bush. I'd quite like to sell as many books to you as I possibly can.

So if you'd like to buy a book for yourself or someone else, I think I can probs help you out.

My lovely friend Helen is raising money for the Belay Foundation who help children who have suffered early life trauma.

Please help if you can. Many thanks.
With exactly one month to go I have 120 miles still to traverse: slow progress but getting there nonetheless! #Belay2025in2025

Happy December, everyone. One of my favourite things about this time of year is the beautiful / funny / fascinating advent calendars made by far more creative people than me. Here's a thread of some of my favourites; do reply with others you find.

seasonal reminder that if someone says they don't drink:
-it's none of your business why
-hosts should have several non-alcoholic beverage options
-the holidays can be a tough period for non-drinkers
-many jokes about not drinking are bad
-people are burned out and might just be tired

📣 Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls and the start of the #16DaysofActivism.

No one should flee violence and abuse only to face further harm on their journeys to safety or again in the UK.

But this is the reality for many refugee women.
