Hi, I'm Lizy, spoonie librarian and novelist near Helsinki, originally from Minnesota by way of Glasgow. I'm currently studying for Finnish librarian qualification.

I write Finland-inspired fantasy for adults and am working on a new project, #LucklessWIP. Rep: @linalanglee.bsky.social

I have been sitting on that joke for 8 years and it finally got away from me.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

FFVII's Tifa doesn't get enough credit for being everyone's mom. Or maybe their aunt. Yeah, let's go with that.
Support your Aunt Tifa.

If you know or meet someone who is pregnant, don't tell them a goddamn thing about their body.

"You're so big." They know.

"You're not that big." Fuck off.

"I'm more pregnant than you."* You're lucky to still have eyeballs after this encounter.

*A direct quote. Excuse me while I scream.

feels like yet again time to mention that the *videogames* industry (that's a creative industry, which people do creative degrees in) brings in more than twice the amount to the British economy as the fishing and steel industries *combined*

I cannot understand what these people think the purpose of human life is?

It is *not* "pursue joy, deal justly, love well, try to understand as much and see as much of this beautiful world and of the deepness, richness and variety of human culture and experience as you can before you die"?

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

Damn Presbyterians going hard to meet the moment
darrigomelanie.bsky.social
I feel like this photo of masked, armed men pepper spraying a pastor protecting his community is going to be a defining picture of this moment in America for a long, long time.

They shot a Presbyterian minister who was in his clerical collar (!) peacefully trying to reach their hearts.

I don't care that it was a nonlethal. They shot a visibly peaceful civilian in the head.

If a conservative says shit about the US being a Christian nation, show them this clip. Fuck.

Desperately hoping the studio will let Rebecca Sugar tackle the darkness in the Moomin stories, as well as the joy. With real artistic freedom, I think this could be beautiful.

Sometimes I try to explain the situation in America to Finns.

"What do you mean they take people away? Why? Where do they go? How can that be possible?"

They couldn't even process the National Guard being sent to DC.
The horrors are so obvious. And yet the Dems sit on their hands.

Lol, this is how the CEO of Bluesky responds to frustrated users? On a platform populated by people who left Twitter when the CEO tanked it? My bags are still packed, pal.

There is no better feeling in library work than seeing a young person work up the nerve to ask for a book recommendation and actually having something for them on the shelf.

Saying that, I recognize that translation is a studied and practiced skill, one which I do not have. So please please please someone else do it.
lizysimonen.bsky.social
If nobody else is translating Lumenlaulaja by Emmi Itäranta into English, I'm going to have to do it myself.

If you liked Circe and for some insane reason, like me, thought "could we do this with Finnish mythology?" The answer is YES.
lizysimonen.bsky.social
Okay I've read half of it but shhhh

Turns out if someone writes a feminist reimagining of my special interests/hyperfixations and the book is only in Finnish, I *can* actually read a 400 page Finnish novel.
lizysimonen.bsky.social
I've only read the first two so no spoilers. Jakob better keep knitting dammit.

imo the English-language internet is really sleeping on the Hildur series. 90% misery and trauma, but the other 10% is "every breathing Icelander throws themselves at hot sad Finnish man while he knits another jumper" and I think that's beautiful.

I figured I'd forget about the whole thing.

Ha ha well that sure came back, huh?

Also, they never leave pregnant people's bodies alone. My god.

Literally last week, a friend told me her doctor said paracetamol (Tylenol) "isn't as safe in pregnancy as people think." Doctor is a pain specialist.

I googled it for any academic work on the subject, and was relieved when I saw it was a new "XYZ causes autism" thing. Like, lol, sure Jan.
