I've said it before, but "meta era" is a terrible name for the 2010s Sonic games. The humor in those games wasn't really "meta" or self-aware. Pontaff was mostly orky dad jokes.
Sonic *Boom* was a very meta show, but its sense of humor was very different from the games.

Why doesn’t Donkey Kong swim underwater in Bananza when he easily does it Donkey Kong 64 and most Country games? It’s a very small detail, but it’s communicated in animation when he briefly dips beneath the water: Pauline frantically holds her nose. She can’t swim, and DK doesn’t want to drown her!

I love wii u era revisionism so much, nothing is funnier than people swearing up and down that the console that got one, maybe two worthwhile games per year was actually super good and underrated because it had a quirky UI or whatever
