Hey Blue Sky, allow me to introduce myself. I’m Lucero and after being obsessed with weather as a kid, I pursued a meteorology degree. My studies + the first withdrawal of the Paris agreement really shifted my mind to question what we can do about climate change. The answer I found: policy.
Lucero, myself, outside of Texas A&M’s arena after my undergrad graduation. I’m holding my diploma tube!

Trump and RFK Jr. aren't making America healthy again—in fact, they're making our nation's health care worse. @cmkelly.bsky.social explains how the administration is undermining its own MAHA agenda:

In just the past year, electricity prices have jumped more than twice the rate of inflation—and this is only the beginning. The Trump administration should be protecting our wallets, not paying off his billionaire buddies.

Enderlin, ND tor #1 from 20 June 2025 upgraded to EF-5. A good reminder that 1) post-event analyses take time & 2) external expert opinion is invaluable. Having been on EF-5 surveys, seemingly small details can make big difference (i.e. tree damage)

Well there it is. The first confirmed EF-5 tornado in 12 years.
"The maximum wind speed of the Enderlin, ND tornado #1 is greater than 210 mph and occurred during the time of the train derailment south of Enderlin, ND."

Post-storm reanalyses are *crucial* for authentic event record-keeping.

Excited to share our new BAMS publication w/ the field!

From Facebook to TikTok, weather and climate information has become increasingly digital. Our new BAMS paper charts the rise of digital meteorology, the AMS CDM Seal, and how universities are evolving to meet it. 🌪️🌩️📲

Just a reminder that NWS is considered essential during a government shutdown. Meteorologists will still go to work, forecasts will still be made, watches and warnings will be issued, data will flow. We won’t be paid until the shutdown ends, but we’ll still protect life and property as always.

Imagine under a Bernie Sanders admin, Congressional Rs and Ds agreed to give a 5% increase to DOD in exchange for big boosts to housing and nutrition.

And then Bernie decided to just illegally ignore it and actually cut defense 10%.

That’s what Trump is doing. How can you make a deal under that?

Two senior Republican appropriators agree it doesn't make any sense for Democrats to agree to a government funding deal unless Trump actually adheres to the deal.

The Democratic alternative CR had language that would address this, but the White House came out strongly against.
“I don’t think the Democrats want to shut down either,” Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), a senior appropriator, told Bloomberg Government. “Their concern right now, and it’s a legitimate concern, is that, how can we agree to any deal when our OMB director will just impound the funds and say we’re not going to spend them there?” “If you’re a Democrat — even just like a mainstream Democrat — your predisposition might be to help negotiate with Republicans on a funding mechanism,” said Rep. Steve Womack, a senior GOP appropriator. “Why would you do that if you know that whatever you negotiate is going to be subject to the knife pulled out by Russ Vought?”

For no reason, I'm lifting up my column on how a government shutdown works.

Every shutdown looks different because of different funding streams, contingency funds, different bodies administering them, etc.

I did my best to explain here to be thorough without being too dense.

The Trump administration has taken actions that would eliminate existing protections from about 88 million acres of public lands. Including the removal of wildlife habitat protections, the total impact of the rollbacks stretches across more than 175 million acres of U.S. land.

A map of the western United States. It shows large areas of land in green, orange, and purple, indicating areas where public land protections are being dismantled. The key indicates that green areas are National forest roadless areas, orange areas are Resource management plans, and purple areas are Lands withdrawn from mining or drilling. The title of the graphic reads, "The Trump administration is dismantling 88 million acres of public lands protections."
