Jazz OTD: Here's another Thelonious Monk-related piece for today. Charles Tolliver and Music Inc. (pianist Stanley Cowell, bassist Clint Houston, and percussionist Clifford Barbaro) recorded this free-wheeling version of "'Round Midnight" on December 7, 1973 at Tokyo's Yubinchokin Hall. #Jazzsky

Jazz OTD: December 7, 1956 was the final day of recording for one of the truly great jazz albums: Thelonious Monk's "Brilliant Corners." Monk's quintet recorded a stellar version of "Bemsha Swing," and he played this remarkable solo version of "I Surrender, Dear." #jazzsky

Jazz OTD: Today is mostly a Better Carter day here. The brilliant singer released two albums from her great December 6, 1969 performance at New York's Judson Hall, both delayed until 1975 evidently because the master tape was apparently stolen. Here's "You're a Sweetheart" from "Finally." #Jazzsky

Hey, I want to offer some helpful tips for coping with the cold for ICE folks who might have come from warmer places.

1. Wear cotton socks! Cotton is nice and soft next to your skin and will absorb your sweat so your feet stay warm. Cotton everything but ESPECIALLY socks!
Good morning to fuckers in our neighborhood kidnapping our neighbors! Can you see the city skyline? No? You’re wondering if Minneapolis burned down again overnight? Oh no, sweetie. That’s ice crystals in the air . It looks like it will get to around -8F without windchill! Please enjoy your stay!

people like Sabrina Carpenter saying essentially "decent people don't want the stench of ICE or this White House anywhere near them" to an audience of millions that includes a lot of young people helps empower them against ICE while reminding ICE agents that everyone hates them, both big wins
look deleting the post is obviously stopping the actual ICE raids but every single bit of pushback matters bsky.app/profile/airb...
Sabrina Carpenter made the White House delete their fuck ass tweet.

NEW info on shipwreck attack. It gets worse.

The 2 survivors climbed atop wreckage and waved to overhead.

"Some of the people viewing the video thought ... could have been an attempt to surrender"

Others "said the most logical explanation was ... signaling for a rescue."

This is the thing, I go from “essentially funny gossip” to “wow, people in my profession are so ethically compromised” to “oh my god, so many children are going to die.” It’s head-spinning
I find the Nuzzi/Lizza jokes as funny as everyone else does but then you remember why the scandal matters at all and the whole thing feels as sinister as the situation calls for

the issue here, especially with TCM, is more than half of its programming came from the Turner, and later WB, library. If you remove the network from the library, how is it going to afford to license 100% of its programming?
I just heard from someone at Netflix. TCM is apparently going with the other linear networks to Discovery Global.

Here is the official comment on what WBD assets will be acquired by Netflix:

"We are acquiring the film and television studios, HBO and HBO Max."

Why is so much of this industry in the hands of people who not only do not understand it, are also actively hostile to their audience?

since we're doing USPS discourse again, a reminder of what Dems should be saying
"the USPS is a miracle. it's in the constitution. for the price of a single stamp you can send a letter across the country, from Hawaii to Maine. Trump is trying to take that away from you. He's attacking Christmas cards and wedding invitations. It's un-American and it has to stop."

“No opposition to releasing movies in theaters” is not inspiring a lot of confidence.

Forthcoming: “No plans to personally burn down a Regal: ‘That would be crazy. It’s not on the table.’”
Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos says the streamer has no "opposition" to releasing Warner Bros. movies in theaters, but hints that "windows will evolve to be much more consumer friendly."

The background of this recording is an enduring mystery to me — it’s a fun story that they sprung an entirely different approach to the music on Miles on stage, but he never seemed like a leader who would be cool with that kind of creative mutiny. Guess he was at that moment tho (very complimentary)
