Alex Stubb on EU competitiveness - excellent

"Economists look at crude GDP... but I look at our Gini coefficients.. & whether it's justice, least corrupt, open, welfare, environment, open media, gender equality.. I don't buy the argument we're doing bad. I'm actually bloody happy"

People can have different political opinions about immigration policy. Political differences are fine, healthy for a democracy.

But if you’re okay with this, that’s not a political opinion. That is a moral failing.

If nothing else, I think we can say that giving power to people who say the country’s problems are easy to fix has provided conclusively that the country’s problems are not in fact easy to fix - and that those people couldn’t arrange a mess in a kindergarten

Heel zuur…

You know what they’re going to store in those warehouses?

I'd like to add that like in all industries, when we stop understanding how our tools work, we become entirely dependent on the corporate entities that own the mold. We are trading the ability to build and repair for the convenience of being permanent tenants in someone else's infrastructure/subs.
Vibe coding is working as expected: it'll kill the open-source, secure, and ideologically maintained alternatives to make sure you have to pay the oligarchs to do anything at all, and they can control what you're allowed to make.

The violent occupation of Minneapolis started with a vlog. I've wanted to find a framework to describe Nick Shirley & others like him: "Influencer" is too quaint. "Journalist" is obviously wrong.

I landed on "slopagandist."

My old college classmate, a part-time TikTok influencer, just openly wondered on Instagram whether something's wrong with her TikTok algorithm.

TikTok's sale to the Ellisons has been finalized. The best time to delete the app from your phones was yesterday; the second-best time to do it is now.
This morning, I recorded a video on TikTok about why DHS’s arguments for the power to enter homes without judicial warrants in immigration cases are bunk.

Nine hours later, TikTok still says my video is “under review,” and can’t be shared.

Well, here’s a link:

The turning point is when that pressure produces real effects: decisions change, roles end, policies reverse. The problem we have is authoritarian systems are resistant to that.

Historically, the response to systematic institutional failings and injustice doesn’t start inside government. It starts when groups of people refuse to let failure fade away, they keep attention on it, document it, repeat it, and make it costly to ignore. For example, the civil rights movement.

Verification (establishing truth), Deliberation (arguing about it), and Accountability (binding power to it). When these work, you have substance. When they break, you slide into performance, and eventually, simulation, and people recognise this, even if they don't use a shared terminology.

Everyone wants to blame the content: misinformation, bots, polarisation. That mistakes catalysts and symptoms for the underlying causes. The crisis isn’t bad information, it's that the very information infrastructure we relied on to create a shared understand of the world had changed completely.

Nothing like this at this scale has happened anywhere in America anytime in living memory.
