Some of you may remember when plants started springing back to life in the new Don River mouth, but this article dives deeper: discovery of a micro resurgence of life since those plants sprouted. American chestnut pollen, a seed from the 1500s, remains of peat bogs, worms, larvae and zooplankton.
Creatures buried in soil for over a century burst back to life in Toronto waterfront
A project to restore coastal wetland leads to astonishing discoveries of a host of life: seeds and plant scraps, as well as water fleas, worms, larvae and plankton

(Which I mention because we tend to post a lot of triumphs on social media, but sometimes doing new stuff is hard, and that's okay.)

It's week four of my first grad course (International Animal Welfare Science) and I'm *finally* starting to get into the swing of things. For example, I only just settled on how I want to take & organize notes, which is great, but now I have three weeks worth of mismatched chaos to try to sort out.

The other morning I discovered that our largest balcony spider had used my favourite chair as an anchor for their overnight web-work, so I nicely sat in another. Now they've incorporated a second chair, and I think I may have misunderstood our relationship.

In honor of National Poetry Day, the greatest parody rewrite of all time:
Screen cap of parodic version of William Blake's "The Tyger" that begins:
Tyger! Tyger! Burning bright
(Not sure if I spelled that right)
What immortal hand or eye
Could fashion such a stripy guy?
What the hammer that hath hewn it
Into such a chonky unit?
Did who made the lamb make thee,
Or an external franchisee?

This was an outstanding session - thank you for sharing your work and experiences!

This was such an inspiring session. I jotted down so many notes, like this @drkendracoulter.bsky.social quote:
"Whether it's 30 seconds or 300 pages, never underestimate the power of story."

Great first session at @animal-justice.bsky.social 's Animal Law and Advocacy Conference. It was fantastic to get an overview of what's happened this year in animal law and policy in Canada. Many stories and issues I'd heard about, but also many I hadn't. Progress is slow, but happening!

Panelists sit in front of a screen that reads From Courtroom to Parliament: Major Cases, Bills and Legal Battles in Canadian Animal Law.

One takeaway for Canadians watching what’s happening in the United States right now is that we need to put more pressure on governments / parties to strengthen democratic institutions and the fourth estate

You can also defend democracy by supporting the work of journalists and civil society groups

Just had my first email exchange with an AI customer service agent. Failed to actually provide the information I asked for, but was very chipper about it. I supposedly have an appointment on Monday. I will be interested to see if any humans from the company actually know about said appointment.

Okay I know I'm a few years late here, but we've just hit the Cats sequence in The Marvels and oh my goodness this movie is fantastic.

We were only going to watch the opening of the #Emmys because we're not usually all that interested in who actually wins or the speeches, but Nate Bargatze's donation ploy has weirdly made the whole thing more compelling.

My first thought was to call them a Hobster, but Horbster sounds funnier.

I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but I recently learned about this 100% vegetarian pizza place with two locations in Etobicoke. Don't know what their delivery range is, but might be interesting if you want to mix it up: mrsinghspizza.ca

Would you please get word to the man whose name is emblazoned on the John Oliver Koala Chlamydia Ward that a vaccine has finally been approved - perhaps there are some shenanigans the team can come up with to help fund distribution? www.bbc.com/news/article...
Koala chlamydia: Australia approves vaccine to curb killer epidemic
Thousands of koalas have died from the disease, with some estimates suggesting only 50,000 remain in the wild.

Gotta love when the postcard you've been using as a bookmark is suddenly illustrating the text.

Page from Emma Marris' 2021 book Wild Souls, and
@whalesanctuary.bsky.social postcard picked up at the most recent @humanecanada.ca conference.
A paragraph in a book reads "If the Whale Sanctuary Project has its way, SeaWorld's orcas -- and the 3,000 other whales and dolphins in captivity around the world -- won't live out the rest of their lives in tanks. In 2020, the nonprofit selected a site in Port Hilford, Nova Scotia, where they plan to net off a bay or cove in the ocean for cetaceans that can't live independently in the wild." A postcard being held against the page features two black and white photos -- a captive orca rising out of the water with a trainer balanced on their closed mouth and a beluga in a tank -- contrasted against a colour photo of a bright blue sky overthe deep blue water of a bay with trees on the far shore. Text reads From Tanks to Tides. Imagine a world in which all whales and dolphins are treated with respect and are no longer confined to concrete tanks in entertainment parks and aquariums. Whale Sanctuary site in Port Hilford Bay, Nova Scotia.
