absolutely beautiful, clearly influenced by the french comic series The Ogre Gods but nonetheless amazing

goeblins always kills it because their teams are made of students who specialize in like color direction or rough animation or final lineart etc instead of doing a whole thing themselves

in which we check in with the original “Antifa” in the form of Blackhawk’s early 80s revival, and a special issue packed to the absolute gills with work by Mark Evanier, Dan Spiegle, Howard Chaykin, Dick Rockwell and … Alex Toth. yeah. cost me all of a dollar. what a world.
Review excerpt - Of course, Howard Chaykin's association with Blackhawk would linger past this volume, with the creator returning to redefine the character in the immediate post-Crisis landscape - notable for Blackhawk being the company's only World War Il era character to receive a spiffy post-Crisis refurbishment. After Chaykin the middle section is occupied by the great Dick Rockwell - perhaps not a name intimately familiar to modern readers, but renowned for being Milt Caniff's assistant for three and a half decades on Steve Canyon. As you'd expect, he sure knows how to draw an airplane. Finally, last but most certainly not least, the last stretch of the book features an appearance by none other than Alex Toth - and yes, I'll give you a moment to replace your monocle after it popped out and rolled on the floor. Blackhawk #260, cover by Howard Chaykin.

It makes me mad that there aren't a lot of sources in english examining his and Kajiwara's careers. My jaw was on the ground when I first learned how much modern "shonen" writers and artists cribbed from them. It's nuts.

Tetsuya Chiba is arguably the most undervalued mangaka outside of Japan. His lasting influence on the visuals of Japanese comics today is greater than that of Osamu Tezuka.

Tetsuya Chiba’s art! The flow of the action, the impacts, the sfx lettering, and the expressions have that kinetic oomph you need for selling meaningful fights indistinguishable from a modern boom. But it’s married to the more exaggerated body language + simpler character design ethos of the era.

Makes sense. If "manga" isn't a special uniquely Japanese invention, then they can't exoticize Japan or feel special when they read those comics. Don't destroy their delusions. That is all they have(🤣)

People's attempts to legitimize manga by connecting it to Ukiyo-e artists instead of its real origins in Western comic strips reminds me of the scene in Seven Samurai where Kikujiro tries to prove his legitimacy by shoving a stolen lineage scroll at the group.

Does anyone have a good quality clipping of E36 from Eartha published in the News of the World Sunday magazine 1981-82? As you can see, the one we have is ripped. Many thanks. This is for the Eartha collection featuring art by John M Burns.
