Canada’s new government is starting Automatic Federal Benefits. We’re going to pre-file taxes for up to 5.5 million low-income Canadians, so they get the benefits they are entitled to — money that would otherwise be left unclaimed.

In 1936 the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Carl von Ossietzky, a German pacifist convicted of high treason for exposing German re-armament. At the time of the award he was in a concentration camp. As a result Hitler banned any German from accepting a Nobel Prize and created his own German prize.

It's World Mental Health Day, which means it's a great time to ask any politician posting about this what they're doing to guarantee public coverage of pharmacotherapy and non-MD-provided psychotherapy.

You know when you finish a book and wish the author had just given you a call to make it a comic book instead?

(I mean, they made the correct choice but a boy can dream.)

It's seriously fucked that we let fossil fuel companies take freshwater, poison it with heavy metals and shit, and then pump it below the water table, allegedly taking it out of the water table for hundreds to thousands of years.
So not just stealing water for generations, but poisoning it as well.

In 2024 the oil and gas industry paid BC taxpayers $20,000 for fresh water. They used and poisoned 9 Billion litres of fresh water. Fracking companies should not be allowed to do this. If you want to call in the government to stop letting them you can here act.stand.earth/page/89100/a...
Fracking is draining B.C.’s freshwater: Act now before it’s too late

The lake sturgeon (a 100-year-living, 90-kg relic from the age of dinosaurs) is returning to Missouri’s rivers after near-extinction from dams and pollution. The revival of a keystone species and signalling broader recovery of the Mississippi basin’s river systems.

Just want to remind everyone that little moments of joy are so important right now.

For instance, my cat does not understand the human concept of kisses beyond Incoming Nose = Love. So every time she’s happy, she’ll smush her face or shove her nose into ours.

Please share your joys with us.

The "set aside the art from the artist" thing in this case is moot. Harry Potter money now goes right to destroying the human rights of trans persons. A billionaire who got her ass kissed for two decades got a rebuke and now she's got to wreck the lives of others.

It cannot be made clearer.

If you continue to support the Harry Potter franchise in any way, you are directly funding the removal of trans people's human rights in the UK.

You don’t need Doug Ford qualifiers in this headline. The Hospital for Sick Children’s study showing “automated speed cameras reduce aggressive driving and speeding by almost half” didn’t make the cut.
Just call them speed cameras.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."
