Australia’s National AI Plan shifts away from the government’s previously promised mandatory AI safeguards. Instead, it’s positioned as a whole-of-government roadmap for building an “AI-enabled economy” theconversation.com/australias-n...
Australia’s national plan says existing laws are enough to regulate AI. This is false hope
Without dedicated AI regulation, Australia will leave the most vulnerable at risk of harm.

Here’s an article from this year with the Australian gun lobby boasting that, with surging gun numbers, it was winning the fight against firearms control advocates. Blame guns. Blame anti-Semitism. Blame terrorists. Do not blame everyday Australians who marched for peace.
Australia’s gun lobby says it’s ‘winning’ the fight against firearm control as numbers surge
There are now more than 4m guns in the community – almost double the number recorded in the years after the Port Arthur massacre that prompted a national crackdown

Good thread for how to do alt text. Bsky makes it easier than many sites and there’s also a tag in this thread to use if you need a volunteer to do it for you.

Please read. So many great pictures (and important news) with no alt text. Many like me won’t repost without it.
So. We’re doing alt text discourse again. COOL. Welcome to a primer.🧵

If you're unfamiliar with what alt text is, what it means, and how it's used around here, the following may be helpful.

Although it's still a very underused feature, users can add "alt text" to any image

Seven of the eight teams have now claimed at least one WBBL title across the eleven seasons of the competition.

Melbourne Stars are now the only side not to lift the trophy.

Champions Hobart Hurricanes finished WBBL11 with an average run-rate of 8.71 rpo, the highest by any team in a WBBL season.

Hurricanes hit a boundary off 1 in 5 balls they faced across the season.

Elyse Villani announced to channel 7 comms that she’s retiring from WBBL 🥺

She’ll be telling the team after the team song.

Feeling a bit emosh. Junior has been such a character of the game the whole time I’ve been able to watch women’s cricket.

End of an era.

Sadly, ME and Long Covid have taken another bright light.

Megan was creative, spunky, intelligent, kind, and beautiful. In the end, she was barely able to exist because of severe ME and Long Covid.

Please don’t let anyone convince you that viruses are harmless

Gov said social media ban would only affect 16 yr olds. But most Aussies are being asked to perform age verification and some platforms have also restricted the comms of 16-18 year olds. The social media ban has a chilling censorious affect beyond the ban and imposes a blanket of mass surveillance

Listening to TMS recap podcast, and the phrase that comes to mind is “toxic positivity” regarding England’s philosophy & attitudes.

And their public positivity despite their current situation reminds me of issues the women’s coaches & leadership had over the last couple of years.

Sharelle McMahon was captain the last time AUS hosted JAM! The last test was on the Gold Coast on Aug 15 2010.

The entire 15 year, 60 match history of the Constellation Cup has occurred since then!

AUS toured JAM in 2011 and since then, the teams have only ever met at WC & CG.
A series worth waiting for.

The Australia Diamonds will host a test series against Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls for the first time in 16 years early next year.

Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne will play host in February.

Oh FFS, this is a bullshit approach. One of the biggest weakness with the system has been that it has been too prescriptive for planners in writing plans with little room to account for individual circumstances. Computerising will make this worse. We're dealing with people's lives here.

Paying Nauru billions to break international law for us
Last night @davidpocock.bsky.social and I read onto the Hansard an interview by the President of Nauru that the Albanese Government has been desperately trying to keep secret.

It shows Nauru plans to send refugees to places they fled. No wonder the secrecy.
