You would not fire these people—including the staff of the hugely, HUGELY important 'Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report'—if you cared at all about public health, if you wanted people to live.

And you would not let your thuggish henchmen fire people like this if you were a responsible president.

I was born and raised in CAs Central Valley and I'm voting #YesOnProp50. Farm workers and people of color are suffering under this administration's racial profiling. Prop 50 gives us the opportunity to fight back on the power grab that TX Republicans and Trump are attempting.

A few minutes ago in the House:

- Speaker Mike Johnson officially cancels votes next week, extending the House recess through a fourth week

- House Republicans block Democrats from passing a bill to pay the troops during the shutdown, ensuring they will miss paychecks next week
House Press Gallery: During today's pro forma session, the Clerk read a message from the Speaker designating Tuesday, October 14 through Sunday, October 19 as a district work period. Punchbowl's Briana Reilly: House gaveled in and out of its pro forma just now w/o recognizing Rep Elfreth, who was seeking to UC a mil pay bill from Rep Sykes.

Elfreth told reporters after that House Dems stand “ready and willing to take” up standalone legislation to pay troops.

EL PASO — a family says ICE showed up at their house looking for migrants and shot and KILLED THEIR DOG, then didn’t help them as the agent ran away and was not identified.

Was just at a neighborhood school at dismissal. Hundreds of people with whistles surrounding the school and stationed down every block making sure ICE doesn’t snatch anyone. The same is happening at all the schools around here. I love my neighborhood and I love Chicago.

These sessions have carried me through my writing, no lie. And made me brave enough to start my new project! ❤️

If Pritzker's plan to defend Illinois is going to work, he needs the support of Chicagoans and Illinoisans to do it - this is an easy way he's rapidly losing that support on the ground right now.

Yeah, I get that it's tricky. But that's not what the ISP is doing - they are actively helping ICE. They could easily be ordered to just stand there and obstruct ICE when they're getting aggressive. (And yes, individual choices on the ground are tricky but the starting point is important)

They are not planning "a violent crackdown" on 10.18. What they are doing is sending a signal to their shock troops to try to cause havoc. But those shock troops will be vastly outnumbered. Go out and protest freely. Do not be cowed.

Today my daughter's preschool is holding a farewell assembly for one of her classmates whose mother has no choice but to self deport. The school is hoping it will be joyful in tone, so we might make this less upsetting for this 3 year old.

There's just no words for the uselessness of this cruelty.

I really wish he'd call of his own state police who are currently armed with batons and pepper ball guns and arresting peaceful protestors at the Broadview ICE facility.

The gap between these powerful on camera statements and his actual actions is ridiculous.

My word that’s terrifying. I’m worried I might miss obvious colic, much less secret stealth colic.

Fun story: when I worked for a private school on occasion a student’s grade would mysteriously change to passing. It was always a student whose parent had been upset at my agreement to let them turn in/redo work instead of just changing the grade. Always happened after the term ended.

Buried lede, almost last sentence:

"He had planned to fly to Spain on Wednesday night but said that shortly before takeoff, he was notified by the airline that his family’s reservations had been canceled."

Bray + wife & kids mysteriously blocked after getting boarding passes & going thru security.

A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to “study the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most “conclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

Imagine studying a technology whose presence in the classroom is so detrimental to the development of writing and research skills (including even the will to know the sources behind claims!) that mitigating its effects becomes a central goal of course design, and concluding with tips on adopting it.

When this is all over, and it comes out that he is/was indeed addled and advisors were feeding him lies and ai... it's vital we don't let anyone use that information to absolve him of any responsibility for every horrific act the admin is doing.

They’re just gonna do a little lite slavery.
In addition, the new rule allows farm employers to charge H-2A workers for their housing, which was not allowed before. "It's a way for employers to continue to house workers and also charge them, and bring down effective wages," said Marcos Lopez of the Labor and Community Center at the University of California, Davis.

Wow, a component that valuable to an industry sure seems like the kind of thing the industry should purchase, then.
