The late (or at least severely delayed) Bergholt Stuttley Johnson was generally recognized as the worst inventor in the world, yet in a very specialized sense. Merely bad inventors made things that failed to operate. He wasn’t among these small fry. Any fool could make something that did absolutely nothing when you pressed the button. He scorned such fumble-fingered amateurs. Everything he built worked. It just didn’t do what it said on the box. If you wanted a small ground-to-air missile, you asked Johnson to design an ornamental fountain.

Many people don't consider that books considered classics, at least up through the 19th century, weren't written as Literature. They were written because the author wanted to tell the story. They were books for the common reader, not for literary critics.

I choose to believe Rincewind's life after THE LAST CONTINENT is one day after another of organizing books to be shelved and making sure the Librarian always has bananas. He's still the Professor of Cruel and Unusual Geography, but being Assistant Librarian is more boring, so he focuses on that.
