IMO the main problem with NIMBYism is simply that "this conflicts with my sense of aesthetics" just isn't ever a valid argument when weighed against the material needs of human beings, regardless of how closely those aesthetics hew to a societal good.

They're both clearly the result of a fracturing or hallucinating psyche whose "uncanny valley" fear center is both overactive and really, really insisting upon this one really specific fractal repetitive thing. Someone with OCD got locked in a monomanic hallucinatory loop; "it insists upon itself".

I've never understood how biblically accurate angels are supposed to be scary, but then what they are is "eldritch" the same way lovecraftian monstrosities are, and I never found those scary either. I found them weird and kind of funny.

During the first lockdown, a couple of years in to the major surge of TERFs on social media, mostly Twitter obviously, I realised I recognised their behaviour. It was how Scientologists behave in those documentaries where eventually people like John Sweeney totally lose it with them.
