The idea that the universalist ideals of decency, respect, or kindness could be *genuinely felt* by anyone is alien to them. They can only interpret that kind of behavior as "virtue signaling," some kind of clever second-order selfishness. Everyone is bad if you dig enough. That's bedrock belief.
