My moderate compromise standpoint is that everyone who has ever said or done Hitlerite things as a "joke" should be a) barred from all jobs and b) barred from all welfare benefits, with no support from the state in facing the ensuing consequences.

God, this hits different now that I've seen The Terror. Terror and Erebus sailed north into a passage unusually clear in a warm year and were beset in ice for more than two years after. If only Sir John had listened to Francis while there was still time for them to escape.

I love HBO's Chernobyl, but that scene where Legasov tells Scherbina they'll both be dead within five years is the writers taking liberties afforded them by hindsight, there is in fact no dose that would have let Legasov make that prediction with any scientific rigor.
"How many people died from Chernobyl?" is a question with an answer that spans orders of magnitude because it turns out it's impossible to tell whether a liquidator or local resident who died of cancer was caused by radiation or genetics or just living in highly polluted Soviet Ukraine.

God, episodes 8 and 9 were brutal to watch. What remains, when all hope is gone? Poor Mr. Goodsir has had to butcher an Englishman for human consumption. Poor Captain Crozier has had to send his ice master off to die and kill Commander Fitzjames out of mercy.
