Literally buying one copy of a book at your local indie bookstore can mean the difference in whether they buy future books from that author.

I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.

The good news: Bath & Body Works "black tea" scented lotion really does smell like black tea!

The bad news: Now that I'm wearing it, I'm worried I smell like an old lady 😅

Anti-book ban/right to read legislation is coming up in at least three states this year:
Massachusetts, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania. Book Riot has a great explainer on what they are, why they matter, and how you can get involved in their passage.

Twitter accounts are based in Russia. BlueSky accounts are based in homes with, frankly, too many books, plants, obsolete cables, and pieces of rustic pottery, that could do with a bit of a tidying up, to be honest.

Did I expect M3gan 2 to shift genre from PG-13 horror to action-comedy? No. Is this an unwelcome change? Also no. Someone clearly recognized the camp in movie one and was like...

I think I just read my first AI article. It had a lot of sentence that *appeared* to have meaning on their own, but didn't really, and contained a lot of restatements of the same general concepts without defining what the concepts meant relative to one another. This was a pop-sci article.

Libraries purchase books. When you see a book at the library, it isn’t “free”

the library bought it.

which in turn means that the community bought it.

In other words, library books are not lost sales for authors and publishers; they’re positive sales. Active sales. Those are bought.

Alice Wong taught us that disabled people don’t just leave memories behind—they leave infrastructure. Lineages of care. Methods of collectivity, survival. She named the connective tissue that holds our communities together, even across death, even across the losses that come too fast and too often.
