Frank Robinson is the only player in history to win Rookie of the Year, league MVP, All-Star game MVP, and World Series MVP. As a lagniappe, he added an extra MVP (giving him one in each league) and Manager of the Year.

There is really no difference between mocking DEI programs, or complaining about losing Aunt Jemima’s Syrup, and posting a video of the Obamas as apes. Donald Trump has done all of those things but it’s all just racist bullshit dressed in different clothing. Just own it.

RIP Mickey Lolich. He was the star of the first World Series I remember watching, and as such a reminder of my long ago, innocent, worry-free youth.

I wrote this a decade ago. (Its says 2018, but it had been published earlier).

The Unexpected Hero (1968 World Series)
Has there ever been a World Series in which the two biggest stars in the game were the starting pitchers in Game 1 (and potentially Games 4 and 7)? I maintain that it happened just once – appropria…

Earlier today I watched The Third Man, for at least the fourth time. Not exactly breaking news, but it is a masterpiece, one of the greatest film experiences I can ever hope to have.

At the gym today they played “Tom Sawyer” while I was hammer curling so I imagined myself painting a fence.

Another day, among too many to count, when this is as true as it was in 1963, and just as important not just for racial justice but for democracy, period.

Carlos Beltran is the second Hall of Fame player who accumulated the plurality of his WAR with the New York Mets.

(plurality==more WAR with Mets than anyone else).

See, I always confuse Leever with Deacon Phillippe--statistical twins, teammates, and I wrote their SABR bios together literally 25 years ago. When I saw Leever on eBay last week, I thought "this is perfect--I already have Phillippe so they'll be great in the binder."
I recently set (or tied) the record for fewest number of cards in a set before (accidentally) getting a duplicate. In October I bought my 1st T205 card--Sam Leever. Last week I decided it was time to get a 2nd T205 card, and today it arrived. The record will not be broken.

When I was a kid my Mom had a crush on Reggie Smith (though she might not have characterized it that way), the local team’s center fielder. Anyhow, I can see her point?

The interesting discussion with respect to the Dodgers signing Tucker is what it means to the upcoming season for various teams but I have to wade through a lot of raw sewage to find it.

When I got an alert on my phone I thought they'd signed Eugenio Suarez, but I prefer this move.
Initial story on the Red Sox agreeing to a five-year, $130 million deal with lefty Ranger Suarez -- a move that gives the team a deeper rotation (and a lot of depth from which to trade) amidst an ongoing push to add more offense. www.bostonglobe.com/2026/01/14/s...
Red Sox sign free agent lefthander Ranger Suárez to five-year, $130 million contract - The Boston Globe
Though Suárez has never been a workhorse, he’s averaged 26 starts and 147 innings since moving into the rotation on a full-time basis four years ago.

There has been talk of late around @sabrbbcards.bsky.social about how one could reduce their collection. I’m just going to ask: could you reach a point when certain cards without monetary or personal value would be simply … thrown out? (Or, as an Oregonian, placed in the recycling bin.)
