#WIPSnips The word for November 24th is 'debut'. After shaking out a bag of synonyms I've got 'beginning' instead. 'The Book of Ashes', Chapter 2, 'Pilgrims'. Paul Brotherwell and Michelle De La Croix are making an attempt at learning how to work together.
Paul sipped at his morning cup of coffee and sighed. After almost breaking his wrist for him Michelle had made an attempt at explaining some things which he had to count as a beginning at least. He now knew the sullen man's name was Amand Delafose and that Michelle thought he might be a gatekeeper, but she wasn't certain. She had taken him outside into the damp night air to tell him that and touched her lips with a finger afterwards to warn him to keep it to himself. What that might mean and how it might affect what they intended to do today he really didn't have any idea.

Our twin suns kiss the toasted land in tandem during half our solar run. Sol Prime is the one we spin around. Sol Twain is a neighbor, close enough to wreck havoc on the climate but independent of our planetary system. At least that's how the astronomer on the mountain explains it. He's an odd duck sitting up there by his lonesome, peering at the heavenly bodies and fiery balls of gaseous substances day and night; putting ink to paper in the form of equations and angles and symbols that some here in our valley might call devil language.

Ready for that anatomy exam?” Boy am I glad Chloe isn’t here, because she’d never let this opportunity slip without saying something like why don’t you help her study some anatomy personally. “Nearly,” I answer, flipping through my notes and willing away the flush in my face. About an hour in, I’m testing my memory of a mammalian lymphatic system chart when Hart’s deep voice interrupts my train of thought. “Your focus is incredible.” I peer up and blink, like I’m stepping into daylight. He’s watching me with a hand draped across his cheek and half his mouth. The other half curves up, and color blooms on my cheeks. “You have this…mode,” he says. “Like your brain has binoculars.” I snort. “Mundy actually calls it Danbi-vision. I was always trying to get my homework done at school so I wouldn’t have to lug so many books to the store, and he always said he wanted to capture my laser focus, code it into a robot, and name the feature Danbi-vision.” “Store?” “My aunt and uncle’s. I worked there.” I train my eyes back on the chart, wondering if he’ll ask another question, unsure whether I want him to. Hart drags his elbows up over the edge of the table and leans in, tugging my gaze back up. “Mundy has his work cut out for him. Seems like trying to bottle lightning.”

I would need to rely on the druids. While many elves received their strength and magic from the Seven, there were others who looked to the harmony of nature. Life will always endure. An abandoned mill would be overrun with the touch of nature in a matter of months. Weeds could navigate their way through stone. In that understanding of how ecosystems could thrive in whatever circumstances were thrown at them, the druids find their studies. By combining the gifts of our Gods and the strength of nature’s endurance, the druids could mend almost any ailment that befell us.

We’ll tell the whole planet where Marcus needs to go.” “Good thing this satellite network isn’t intelligent, then,” said Lilith. “Oh, I’d beg to differ on that point.” All eyes shot to the viewscreen. The voice was an unfamiliar one. Deep, breathy and patronising. Masculine. Vital. But still with the clinically clean edges of a machine translating its thoughts into less efficient speech. “Who the fuck are you?” Avalynne demanded. “Me?” replied the voice. “I am the governing intelligence for the Accord Planetary Embargo Commissioning System. You can call me APEX if you like.” From over the curved horizon of the planet came the wide disc of the satellite core. Its thrusters were burning, and its glassy eye was shining. “The question, my noisy little intruders, is who are you?”

“Maggie.” He breathed her name like a prayer. Maggie’s head shot off the countertop. She watched his eyes greedily travel from her toes, curled on the cold tile, up to her flushed cheeks. He took his fill of her until she was breathing heavily, fighting the urge to run to him—or away from him—she wasn’t quite sure. She couldn’t handle the heat in his gaze, the longing in those green eyes. “Maggie. Forget what I said in there. Please.” The way he said the last word had her stomach fluttering. Angling away from him, she poured the kernels into the popper. “Let’s forget the whole thing. You were right, and I…” She shrugged, watching the motorized arm agitate the popcorn and oil on the heated plate. “I just want to watch the movie. We’re two people who happen to know each other, eating some popcorn. And wine. I need wine.” “I don’t want to forget the whole thing.” He was too close now. That thread of tension was buzzing between them like an electrical storm. Maggie was tired. Tired of fighting against whatever this was. Maybe if she gave in and kissed him, it would get these feelings out of her system. They had twenty-four hours together, why not pretend a little longer before breaking it off cleanly. Maggie shrugged, and he took a step closer. Her body turned instinctively toward him. “Maggie.” He whispered her name this time, and a shiver ran through her. One of those large hands gripped her hip while the other slid around the nape of her neck, tangling in her curls. He slid her closer, pulling her on tiptoes so she pressed against his chest. “Mags.” Her name was a breath against her lips. He paused, millimeters away, asking for permission. His nose brushed against hers.

From The Magic in Our Bones 🦴😭

He doesn't have to point to my bed for me to know what he wants. When we were about ten, Nico was plagued by nightmares, and every night he would end up sleeping in my bed, just holding me like I was his security blanket... making the Peanuts pajamas he wore at the time apt (though Linus was only represented in miniature). Even though he doesn't sleep and can't have nightmares, I bet his brain is cycling through the day just like mine is, minus the Azura stuff. Though who knows what he and Mom had to deal with at the end of the Council meeting after I bailed? Bailing on them wasn't cool. Scooching over in bed is the least I can do. He lies down behind me and wraps his arms around my waist. It definitely feels different, just his humerus and radius around my middle, instead of his biceps and triceps. But it also feels normal. Just Nico, my brother, after a nightmare of a day. Then he buries his face into my back, while his body is wracked with inaudible sobs. The pit in my stomach that was already growing into quite a black hole after today, doubles in size at the feel of his convulsing body. I let him get it out of his SYSTEM; Nico always needs to cry it out before I try to calm him down.

Kyoka had the benefit of thousands of years of military experience. The lack of martial training was a control scheme. There was no reason to deliberately under-train a portion of your combat force unless you wanted that combat force crippled on purpose. The Demon Slayers wanted witch members fully dependent on paladin members' support for any real engagement scenario. Kyoka was already pondering how to address this systemic, societal issue, because stupidity always annoyed her, and she suffered from having memories of the authority to actually make societal-level changes. However, she recognized that any plans would take time to implement. Thirteen of them. Thirteen little ogres with their own personalities but a shared obsession with shoes, for some reason. Quite fascinating, really, but not at all her area of expertise. Now, spriggans, she could understand. Well, not so much understand, as such, but they were plant-like creatures. Flirty knew where she was with plants. She turned over the page, back to the start of the entry, and read from the beginning, taking a sip of cold tea, regretting it, then taking another sip.
