New issue of Hypatia, 40.3, is now published: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
A gold flyer announcing that the new issue of Hypatia is now available. The flyer has a detail from the front cover of the journal running along its centre, depicting various abstract women's faces and hair in different shades of blue.

Tbh it strikes me that the most likely outcome would have just been that all the 'how the light gets in' posters would have a little 'supported by the RIP' logo at the bottom.

Scots actor releases statement after Harry Potter role backlash
The National (Scotland)8 Aug 2025BY GREGOR YOUNG

Michelle Gomez said she understood why her involvement was ‘painful for many’
SCOTTISH actor Michelle Gomez responded to a backlash from fans after it emerged she has taken on a role in an upcoming Harry Potter audiobook series.

Gomez, known for her roles in Green Wing and Doctor Who, posted a statement after fans were furious she is taking on the role of Professor McGonagall in an Audible series of JK Rowling’s books.

Fans were not happy with Gomez taking on the part, as Rowling has become renowned for her opposition to transgender rights.

Gomez insisted she was a supporter of LGBT+ rights, and said she “understood” why her taking on the role was “painful” for many fans.

The Harry Potter author recently called for a boycott of Marks & Spencer over a transgender member of staff working in the lingerie section.

Rowling also contributed to For Women Scotland’s crowdfunder when they took the case over the definition of a woman to the Supreme Court. Following the ruling, which said the definition under the Equality Act referred to biological sex, Rowling posted a photograph of her smoking a cigar on a yacht, celebrating the outcome.

Following the judgment, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) published guidance that essentially banned transgender people from using toilets of their acquired gender.

One fan wrote: “It is incredibly disappointing to see that Michelle Gomez has chosen to work on the Harry Potter audio series.

“There isn’t an excuse for it – JK Rowling’s contribution to anti trans legislation and violence, supported by her HP earnings, has been well known for several years now.”

I am once again contemplating this banger.
A tweet from David East that reads: "starting to think that the rest of the world was actually fine in Children of Men and Britain just chose to be like that"

The fact that the one game made by an explicitly communist co-op game studio now has three successor studios making a self-proclaimed sequel to it, and dispute the legitimacy of the other two is, of course, the most communist outcome possible.

I wrote a really short piece for Hypatia about being an abolitionist and a survivor and why philosophers are such jerks (Literally I started writing this after giving a talk about the book I wrote with Barrett Emerick since Q&A made me feel like utter shit) doi.org/10.1017/hyp....

A friend who is a trans woman and who plays women’s football received an email from the FA about the decision which contains this paragraph.

Free therapy to cope with the fact you’ve been transphobic bigots, fucking brilliant.
This is not a decision that we have taken lightly, and we know that this news will be deeply disappointing. In the immediate aftermath of this news to help support you through this, we have partnered with Sporting Chance to provide you with free, fully confidential, online talking therapy with specially selected therapists, should you wish to do so. Up to six sessions can be provided to you and to do this you simply need to contact Sporting Chance by email at

A small tip, a small *hint* for any journalist who has an interview request for a member of a marginalised group: make sure you don’t have a bunch of dehumanising tweets about that group on your twitter feed.
