As one of the few people who will still put a tv music channel on (in this case while folding laundry, etc), I alight on Now 70s showing Coz I Luv You by Slade and have one obvious thought and one probably terrible idea.
CILY is magnificent.
What do we need to do to get Sudan Archives to cover it?

Ex-England Rugby Union Centre Will Greenwood obviously a fesshole contributor.
When Clive Woodward suggested he wouldn’t swap any of his squad with any of the New Zealand squad, Greenwood is reputed to have said “the lads have had a chat and we think we’d swap Austin with Jonah Lomu”.

Worked with a guy called Austin Healy; I kept calling him Vauxhall Nova thinking it was hilarious but it seemed he didn't as I was given a verbal warning by HR.

(2024, UK)
Unfinished Business? Obviously - pick 25 more tracks (or submit a list of 50). And making sure Nia Archives and jungle as a genre gets some more votes, also unfinished business imo.

Into battle with a gladiatorial theme, Simz is another British rapper who could stand to get a few more votes - Point And Kill seems pretty unrepresented so far, so it’s 5 on this and hope PAK has a better 2nd half.

Listening to the yearly playlists, unless your name is Kendrick, rap is doing poorly, and UK rap worse. Hopefully we can turn that around, even if only by piling in on stuff already picked. Got close to my list.

“Let’s people operate their beds without reliance on the normal infrastructure” is a set of words, each of which make sense individually, and have the shape of meaning collectively, but can only ever lead to one question: what?
The AWS outage bricked people's $2,700 smartbeds, leaving them in a reclining position or with the heat up. People were unable to use them, basically. A GitHub repo exists that lets people operate their beds without reliance on the normal infrastructure

The AWS Outage Bricked People’s $2,700 Smartbeds
When Amazon Web Services went offline, people lost control of their cloud-connected smart beds, getting stuck in reclined positions or roasting with the heat turned all the way up.

This World Cup feels like an exercise in spending a month or so sending a load of teams to go and watch it rain in Colombo, play some games between themselves and then confirm what we all knew anyway - that Australia are the only team that ever really had a chance of winning the tournament.

Re: comments asking the point of the Mercury?
Pretty sure it was to drive sales (it worked for some acts). Timing gives this away
Brits is post Xmas/Jan sales, to try and get people to spend
Mercury - post summer, pre Xmas, same reason
Streaming knackers this so it’s a legacy thing now I think.

Backlash in progress I see.
I expect a Fender backlash because a) that’s what people do when someone vaguely rock gets biggish and b) because I think many Brits are Springsteen suspicious (as you allude to).
He’ll need to do a Nebraska (the album for people who start their sentence on it - I don’t like Bruce Springsteen but…)

I did say…
The first QOTSA album: indie was boring the hell out of me, and this stiff, riff rock made me realise there was something to heavy, groove based music. Exploring further and back, I wind up at motorik, Kraftwerk and the like but then come up the other end to what that influenced elsewhere.
a poll idea that just popped into my head: since we've collectively been doing 90's nostalgia for awhile as a culture, what's your secret/stealth best 90's album? not something necessarily widely super critically beloved but is nonetheless great and defining for you?

Though, without having heard the record in question, I suppose there’s a question here re: accuracy versus meanness that needs investigating.

No one needs to know my thoughts on the substance of what has been released. I will say 7 albums in a little under 8 years, plus 4 more re-recordings is an admirable rate. 60s-esque. Prince in the 80s type rate (factoring in all the stuff that got stashed in the vault).

Been doing some more #TheTenX5 listening, using the 2015 PPP nominations list.
Instructive for me, since 14-16 is probably as bad mentally as I ever have been. I missed most of this - and it seems I didn’t nominate anything for this PPP. About the only new music I engaged with was Susanne Sundfor.
