Isaiah (MC of THE COME BACK KIDS, queer Appalachian cosmic horror) is grey-aromantic, though not conscious of it. He kinda-sorta likes the idea of a relationship but has no real drive to pursue one. There's a romance thread to his story, but that surprises him more than anyone. #QueerPrompts

There's usually some romance happening, but it's usually a side plot or minor plot point. Rudolph has a second chance romance sub plot in Philly by Night. Daumantas and Cyril are already an established couple in Armor of the Saints.

This weekend's task: recording chapters of CHILDREN OF SOLITUDE for the audiobook. Really pleased to have the chance to narrate it myself. For me, as an audiobook aficionado, I always prefer books read by their authors even if they aren't "pros." I like being able to hear what mattered to *them*.

Over and over again with this novel I've said to myself, "I have no idea what should happen next," and then opened the Scrivener doc anyway and an hour later had 1,000-3,000 more words. I just have to keep doing that enough times I guess (as I did with the previous 13 books).

TFW Facebook keeps suggesting one send a friend request to a former neighbor but the only reason the algorithm has singled them out is because they died last week. Yikes.

Thanks, @erynmccee.bsky.social! Amazing questions!

Latest: CHILDREN OF SOLITUDE, queer Appalachian cosmic horror about a prickly queen, his dead mother, and the porn star next door.

Next: THE COME BACK KIDS, about a lapsed Cthulhu cultist, his new boyfriend, and evil children.

Voths had waited out parents' final breaths by their side down through generations, and Mary had dreaded this day her whole life. But she brought the knife as instructed all the same.

"Hand it here," her father said with his final breath. "I aim to need it where I'm going."

Of course I'm going to do a writing prompt. Of course I am.
Go to.
I'm waiting.

The scene where the "guncles club" realizes their young charges are actually evil. Someone's going to get hurt. I'm not even sure which characters it'll be. No matter who, it will be heartbreaking. Horror is modern tragedy, and I'm putting off letting the hurt come into bloom.

Q3:
Here at #HorrorWritersChat we really do like to peel back those insecurities and fears and expose them to the light. You can do this.
Which scene do you keep putting off? And why?

Internalized religious trauma & social stigma. Many of us are raised by people who chose not to protect us, preferring to cultivate in us their own attitudes *so we would be poisoned by them*. They did this by choice. They actively sought to teach us to harm ourselves forever.

#HorrorWritersChat
Q2.
This question is not about the comfortable places that we go with horror. But the uncomfortable ones. The ones that turn us inside out even as we write them. The ones that make us wonder who we are, at the end. #HorrorWritersChat

I'm Michael, I write queer cosmic & supernatural horror.

Every queer person has had to overcome long odds in a world filled with remote, hostile forces and their human agents among us. We need stories about surviving them and about being stronger for it.

OK, so here we go, #HorrorWritersChat bods.

You know the drill. Four questions, repost as many as you like, no links: promo at the end.
First I want to know.
What makes you write the kind of horror that you write?

Oh good gravy no. Isaiah (THE COME BACK KIDS) is very nearly aromantic and does not get emotionally involved. It isn't exactly that he's disinterested, it's that he just sort of thinsk it unavailable. He doesn't indulge the sort of flirtation that leads to heartbreak.
