This weekend's task: recording chapters of CHILDREN OF SOLITUDE for the audiobook. Really pleased to have the chance to narrate it myself. For me, as an audiobook aficionado, I always prefer books read by their authors even if they aren't "pros." I like being able to hear what mattered to *them*.

Over and over again with this novel I've said to myself, "I have no idea what should happen next," and then opened the Scrivener doc anyway and an hour later had 1,000-3,000 more words. I just have to keep doing that enough times I guess (as I did with the previous 13 books).

The scene where the "guncles club" realizes their young charges are actually evil. Someone's going to get hurt. I'm not even sure which characters it'll be. No matter who, it will be heartbreaking. Horror is modern tragedy, and I'm putting off letting the hurt come into bloom.

Was researching for a new @arcanecarolinas.bsky.social today and discovered the federal government (GUESS WHO AND WHY, GEE) took down a US Fish & Wildlife Service long-form article about formerly enslaved people creating communities in the Great Dismal Swamp. Thank the gods for archive dot org!
